The navy reports at least 189 officers and sailors died when destroyer Truxtun and cargo ship Pollux were driven aground in a north Atlantic gale off Newfoundland. Lt Commander Ralph Hickox is listed among the lost. Pollux’s skipper survived.
Ames high school senior Mary Elizabeth Lush, 17, won the national cherry pie baking contest in Chicago. She used honey to replace part of the sugar, and the judges praised both pies for taste and color, noting the honey enhanced the appearance.
Don Fastle 25 of Earlham died when a Burlington Trailways bus struck his auto driven by Paul Cunningham Jr son of Congressman Paul Cunningham Des Moines. The crash happened one mile east of Fontanelle on Highway 92 during a heavy snowstorm as Cunningham’s car skidded across the icy hilltop. Richard Holst of Omaha driver of the bus reported the incident.
Audubon 21 year old David S. Davis an intellectual objector has recanted his decision not to register for the draft and seeks to enlist and get out of jail He will be in the United States army by Wednesday if all goes well Davis a school teacher changed his mind during a visit in his Audubon county jail cell with Rev O K E Cooley Audubon Methodist minister
Siou City officers reported a squadcar stolen from the police station garage during shift change. The car was later found abandoned on a country road near Hiawatha Kansas, ending an embarrassing incident for the department.
Graettinger William Herke proved his hearing is acute by listening to snow. Ben F. Reeves dropped his watch in deep snow and searched. Herke put ear to the snow and heard the ticking. They dug and recovered the watch.
Waterloo city council approves a tentative 1942 43 budget totaling 1 294 384 dollars. The plan reduces 150 950 from the previous setup with war emergency cuts removing 30 000 for parking meters 40 000 for parking lots 50 104 for safety lane 40 000 for a centralized street department garage and 810 in the miscellaneous fund.
Mrs. Amelia Wobith, 77, died at Cedar Valley hospital after being found unconscious in a smoke filled house south of Charles City. Fire officials believe an oil burning stove caused a heart attack that led to her death. Her son Ed, who lived nearby, found her and she never regained consciousness.

News from here confirms the death of Mrs J A Y Ashby of Des Moines former Washington resident Estelle Hulse. Funeral services set for Thursday in Des Moines and Friday in the local Methodist church. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Survivors include daughter Mrs Verne Stierwalt son Gerald and grandson Charles Stierwalt plus brothers Ed Hulse and Elmer Hulse.
Mrs. Sadie Moore of near Washington hears her nephew Harry L. Malson of Indianapolis was killed aboard the battleship Arizona during the December 7 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. He had just reenlisted after four years service. Memorial services were held in Indianapolis. A brother has joined the navy seeking chance at the Japanese responsables.
Muscatine public and parochial schools will receive government milk at one cent a day for a half pint bottle. The announcement came from the surplus marketing administration via the Chamber of Commerce.

Clement Rummelhart 36 died in a Texarkana hospital after a bolt struck him while he stood on the ground below a tower where three brothers also worked as steeplejacks. He was born in Riverside July 5 1905 and survived by his wife Pearl, daughter Clemen tine, his parents Louis and May Wombacher, three brothers Glenn Elmo and Clifford and three sisters Myrna Richards Rose Zimmerman and Leona Duder. Funeral plans await returning relatives.
