In Muscatine the coroner’s inquest into Elizabeth Lewis’s sudden death could not establish a cause. The jury returned an open verdict as doctors examined her organs at the State University of Iowa after an apparent tooth extraction preceded her collapse. Irene died shortly after the dental procedure.
William Kuklentz, 20, who was shot and captured after a botched robbery of Morris J. Sperling, a Sioux City grocer, pleaded guilty and received a 10 year sentence at Fort Madison penitentiary. He had previously served time at Anamosa reformatory and was moved from a hospital jail.
Avery A. Austin, 31, of Rockford, died from a broken neck after a collision with a car driven by Fred Cameron, 35, football coach at Vinton High School. Both men were taken to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. Cameron suffered a possible fractured hip.
Charl Schuster and Morris Turner were bound over to the Webster County grand jury on burglary charges after officers say they admitted ransacking Fort Dodge homes while owners were away for the winter.
Kenestt report states three men were burned or injured in an explosion at the Jefferson Highway garage. John Ilson and Roy Rierson both 45 sustained first degree burns to their heads and hands and were taken to Mason City hospital where their condition was listed as satisfactory.
Ottumwa couple Mr and Mrs T Henry Foster donate a completely equipped ambulance to the British Red Cross for England. The gift is credited to the Wapello County Red Cross chapter.
The case of Wendell Anderson 26 of Norpralk whose car injured Robert Britton 5 was continued to February 28 by Justice of the Peace Bernard Krull. Anderson, arrested after the crash Feb 11, faces charges of reckless driving leaving the scene and failure to aid. Britton with a steel brace for three years due to osteomyelitis suffered fractures of both legs.
Mrs. Harry Chandler of Lewistown delivered a girl at her mother-in-law’s home in De Graff. Two hours later a son was born to Mrs. Chandler in a hospital in Bellefontaine, about 12 miles west, illustrating an unusual twin birth in separate locations.
Washington remains honored as the father of the country on the 209th anniversary of his birth February 22 1732 at Wakefield Virginia. He rose from surveyor to general to president and married Martha Custis. He died December 12 1799 and is interred at Mount Vernon with his wife.
Marcus J. Chandler dies aged from a heart attack while outdoors near his barn. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Fairview cemetery in Wellman. He had been ill since last summer after breaking his leg and hospitalization in Washington County. He is survived by his wife and sister Mrs. Rhoda Clinton of Oklahoma City.
Tito Schipa, tenor with the Metropolitan Opera, says he likes jazz but only with limits. He compares it to a child that must be kept in its place while noting the opera will always remain popular.
Mrs. Mel Boileau and Mrs. Claude L. Reister visited University Hospital where Mr. Boileau marks his birthday and shows satisfactory progress. George Birney family moves to 323 West Third Street from 1042 East Polk Street. Mrs. Walter Brown plans a weeks visit with her Iowa City relatives before Mr. Brown heads to Camp Claiborne Louisiana for medical corps duty. Mrs. Fred Downing and Mrs. Carl Voorhees will attend the American Legion auxiliary midwinter conference in Des Moines.
The Washington National Farm Loan association held its annual meeting at the Methodist church basement with 123 attending the noon banquet. O. C. Pettit presented the secretary treasurer report, noting healthy association finances and a three and a half percent interest rate over six to seven years. Directors R. L. Duncan and Ira Coon were reappointed for three years.
Cedar Falls arrived this afternoon to spend time as guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Shannon and will remain through Sunday.
Health officials report 23 mumps cases affecting 20 high school students, 1 junior college student, and 2 Stewart grade children. Guidance urges school absence for 14 days after onset, selective return for exposed or previously infected children, and bed rest for males over 12 to prevent orchitis.
Census figures show U. S. citizens now spend over 306 million dollars annually on newspaper subscriptions. This marks an increase of about 18.7 million dollars per year over the past decade since 1929.
Secretary of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard told the Farm Institute in Des Moines that Britain faces a worsening food situation due to Continental losses and shipping cuts. He said American farm output can meet British demand while keeping ample U.S. reserves, with pork, dairy, poultry, wheat, and cotton available for export on demand. BE A. ONeal warned the farm sector risks being the forgotten man unless parity and defense measures persist.
The 1940 census shows a 3.1 percent drop in farm numbers to 6,096,789 from 6,812,350 in 1935 and 6,288,648 farms since 1930. The report notes total farmland remains high despite fewer farms.
Mrs. Alice Crockett a former motion picture actress sues Capt. Fritz Wiedemann in San Francisco claiming the German consul general refused to pay her for a trip to Germany during which she asked about his standing with Nazi party leaders. She seeks eight thousand dollars for salary and expenses. Wiedemann calls the charges fantastic.

Mrs R L Coulter visited Davenport for weekend with her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Marvin Williamson and family. Mrs Tom Downing returned home after a month visiting nieces in Cambrige Geneseo and Moline Til. Eight members and two guests attended the Phalanx meeting at 7 pm with a brief business session.
Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio challenged the British aid measure in a prepared Senate speech. He urged that unless the United States is prepared to declare war, it should not provide aid. Taft warned against drifting into war or being misled by a majority. Senator Arthur Capper criticized the bill as giving Roosevelt broad war powers and control of the economy.
Fred Downing M L Brown Harry Simpson Preston Wolt Howard Miller and Martin Whit taker attended the state convention of the American Legion in Des Moines this afternoon. The sessions were held last Sunday and Monday, but some local attendees could not depart.

Salt Lake City police uncovered prisoners in the city jail receiving coffee spiked with opium from a nearby restaurant. Detectives raided the restaurant and found a large quantity of opium. Representatives will attend meetings tomorrow.
