Paul Kline 43 of La Porte City is in serious condition after being shot by Marshal Henry Kruse in a pool hall altercation. Authorities say Kruse tried to stop Kline from mixing alcohol. Kline seized a club and charged the marshal.
U S Senator Hugo L Black of Alabama will be principal speaker at the Democrat Victory dinner at Hotel Fort Des Moines on March 4 in Des Moines Iowa.
DES MOINES a gang of youths armed with air rifles broke into an unoccupied residence valued at 30600 dollars and damaged lighting fixtures bulbs plate glass door and French doors and windows.
Iowa issued 22 025 marriage licenses in 1936 surpassing 1929 peak by 100. Divorces granted in 1986 totaled 4721, up from 4519 in 1934.

Clinton County authorities say 21 year old Howard Sterenberg of Fulton Indiana is under arrest after his auto struck and seriously injured 70 year old Richard Rider the tollkeeper. Sterenberg admitted he was the driver and Rider suffered serious head injuries after being dragged about 400 feet.
F J Thraves stock buyer and former local merchant collapsed from carbon monoxide while working on a car in his garage. Found by his wife and revived by firemen after forty minutes, he was reported recovering.
DES MOINES The Iowa Senate will face early this week the first of a group of bills seeking state appropriations of seven million dollars yearly to match federal aid of equal amount for welfare activities under the social security act.
Iowa City police chief C. O. Paine’s 1935 appointment by Mayor Thomas Fe. Martin was ruled illegal by the state supreme court. Bender had sought a rehearing to reinstate as chief, but the court overruled the petition.

Crooked Creek southwest of town overflowed its banks after heavy rain Saturday night. Lowlands along the creek were flooded and the water neared the level of the bridge on primary road No. 1 at midnight.
L A Jones spent Sunday bucking snowdrifts rather than church or rest. He received a call to Riverside before seven in the morning and did not reach home until five in the evening after negotiating road No 161.

Frank Clifford Thompson age 68 died at 6 00 AM Sunday at his Riverside area home after years of asthma and a week bedfast. Born November 4 1873 in Louisa County he was son of Wheeler and Elizabeth Orr Thompson. Survived by wife Winnie Quinn two daughters Mrs Mary Deatseh Lone Tree and Mrs Alice Deatseh Riverside two sons Wheeler and Wilbur at home two brothers A D Thompson Ainsworth and Robert Thompson Riverside and two grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM at Riverside Methodist Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery. arrangements by L A Jones Washington.
In Leon Iowa on February 22 the snowplow engine derailed two locomotives a snowplow and two railroad cars as the crew miraculously escaped injury in the incident reported by INS.
Des Moines reports the Iowa legislature reconvening to a local option liquor bill backed by the Iowa Anti Saloon League. Senate sponsors George M. Hopkins and Ora E. Husted, with House sponsors including W H Yager and E L Stewart. The measure would allow eastern cities to vote for liquor by the drink while rural areas stay dry and roadhouses operate. A majority local vote decides within each jurisdiction amid expected opposition.
A. D. Craig died this morning in Salem Oregon at age 76 after moving there last summer to join his wife and children. A Riverside native he farmed and worked in insurance and served as assessor, later living with his daughter in this area. Burial likely at Riverside. he leaves wife two sons and three daughters.
OsKaloosa Feb 22 Two Fairfield ex convicts Paul and Everette Schroeder face kidnapping charges for forcing Walter Lindley a farmer to drive 100 miles through snow drifted roads Saturday night. They were captured after a gun battle with five officers who wounded them slightly. In Ottumwa they were questioned about Carl Heider slaying in a dice game holdup and an Ottumwa druggist robbery last week. They may face Illinois murder charges. Both men were on parole.
A Burlington railroad stow plow destroyed 200 feet of track on the Keokuk and Clarinda line after colliding with a pile of ice at highway 69. The ice halted the crash, and the plow came to rest 150 feet from the impact in a nearby farmer’s field.
