Emmetsburg column notes Palo Alto County Bar Association resolution denounces President Roosevelt's plan to increase Supreme Court personnel. It states the proposal would strike at the foundation of our form of government.
District Judge T A Beardmore ordered destruction of a pinball machine seized by police at Mulligan and Sons downtown service station. The court ruled the device was a gambling device and was being operated as such.
Montgomery County Council for Better Education formed after a resolution favoring the school equalization and retirement bill was adopted. Mrs. Frank Bell of Red Oak was elected president.
Charles City authorities ordered Verne Schoolcraft held for the grand jury on charges of malicious mischief after he allegedly cut down 20 trees on the farm rented from Mrs. Hannah Bennett. Disputes between Bennett and Schoolcraft preceded the court action.
W. P. Myers, 53 years with Harper McIntire Wholesale Hardware Co., Cedar Rapids and Ottumwa, was named president succeeding the late Russell W. Harper. Other officers named include A. R. Carlson as vice president, Samuel Harper as vice president and secretary, and Frank Fiedier as treasurer.
A late night crew freed an 18 ton tractor and snowplow that fell through a bridge near Quimby in Cherokee county. Frank Morrow and Dale Timmins, the workers who operated the tractor, escaped injury.
About 100000 Iowa transplants will gather on ten acres of Lincoln Park in Los Angeles for the Hawkeyes annual winter picnic and reunion on February 27. Honor guests include former President Herbert Hoover and Governor Frank Merriam, both Iowa natives.
State agents William Fogarty and Joe Burke joined Sheriff Frank Buchheit in tracing the Fat Heider killing during a craps game holdup. They left the Dusty Rhodes dynamite case in Iowa City to pursue two or three bandits suspected in a dice game robbery shootout here.
Ruby Brown an 18 year old Phelps City Missouri girl sued the Mawhor estate claiming W J Mawhor seized and kissed her against her will. The suit valued at 6000 dollars brought only 100 dollars at settlement declared by her attorney as out of court. Ruby was employed in the Mawhor home in December 1935 while Mrs Mawhor was in a hospital.
Dubuque city council met behind closed doors to decide whether to sustain the suspension of three police officers over the arrest and death of James Powers. Powers suffered a stroke but was jailed for intoxication. If approved, the suspensions allow appeals to the police and fire commission.
Eldora Iowa February 18 James A Leckey age 32 was sent to Fort Madison state penitentiary to serve a ten year term for forgery.
The Iowa Senate approved 47 to 0 a bill reducing the unemployment commission board from five to three members. The measure offers full time posts at 4500 dollars annually, with governor appointments needing senate consent and six year terms. An amendment, passed 38 to 5, allows hiring a secretary at up to 2400 dollars yearly.
The Iowa senate approved a compromise homestead tax relief bill with two key changes. It creates a state wide allocation giving equal refunds per dollar of home valuation and defines a homestead as a residence owned by a resident of the state where the owner lives at least six months a year. The house is expected to take up the measure next week with favorable action anticipated.
More than 200 people gathered at the Y yesterday evening for the 1937 Y circus staged by the Y's Men’s club. The athletic show drew a large audience and a vaudeville segment was well patronized. Final fundraising total was not yet known, but proceeds will support YMCA work.

A 24 hour truce at the Fansteel Metallurgical plant near North Chicago held today with 80 sitdown strikers inside two buildings surrounded by 300 deputies under Sheriff L A Doolittle. Officials at a midnight conference reportedly demanded troops, but conciliators and officers sought negotiations and to avoid renewed violence. Ten strikers left for home as others resisted with gas and missile attacks.

Dr. Myron Boozer of Cedar Rapids a noted Presbyterian minister and dean of men at Coe College died suddenly. He had been invited to speak in Washington during Passion Week, and his death requires Washington ministers to find a new speaker for the series.
Chancellor Adolf Hitler opened a vast motor exhibit in Berlin and cited American General Motors strikes as part of his claim that strikes are economic nonsense. He argued Germany should avoid isolation and said such labor actions cost more than wartime gains. The hall displayed about 1,000 cars and 1,000 motorcycles with American models present.
Des Moines man E. R. Casebeer, struck by an automobile on his ninety seventh birthday, Feb 29, is in improved condition in a hospital. He reaffirmed his aim to reach 100 years old.

Firefighters responded to a blaze at the Mace garage this afternoon at 2 30. A car was burning but the fire was quickly controlled with no other damage reported.
A $75,000 blaze tore through a three story building on South Michigan Avenue endangering St Luke's hospital across the street. Fire officials and hospital staff evacuated 450 patients as smoke filled windows and patients on the avenue side were moved within the building.
Funeral services for Oral Sweet were held yesterday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev. Carl M. Klein and Rev. Arthur Atack in charge. Pallbearers included T. L. Borkhart, Ray Cox, George McDaniel, George Breitenbach, Oscar Davis and Manton Hebner. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery.
