A snowplow crew clearing the highway between Fairtex and Rockport uncovered an automobile buried under deep snow. The car appears to have been abandoned during earlier storms and hidden from view.
McGregor farmer Donna Brink checked her barn on a cold night and found four furred heads cuddled in straw instead of three newborn puppies. One head moved and revealed a rat among the pups.
Floyd Horton and Anna Johnson were held for questioning in the death of Horton's wife, Mrs. Horton. Coroner Floyd Shum ordered an inquest after a State toxicologist reported traces of strychnine in the dead woman's stomach.
More than forty men labor around the clock to locate leaks on two blocks of Clinton's business and residential area. Inspectors from Interstate Power Co monitor basements for gas accumulations and relocate occupants to safer quarters. The danger is not immediately life threatening but precautions are in place to prevent illness or asphyxiation.
Garner Fred Willods, a cafe owner, reported being followed home after midnight by a trio he mistook for police dogs. Night Marshal Rick Clark confirmed only one police dog in town, and locals think the wolves arrived seeking food.
Ed Hilliard of Panfield drove a wrecker that struck a snow bank and swung into the path of an oncoming truck driven by Floyd Lowman of Oskaloosa. A dozen care dy the truck were thrown free as the collision occurred leaving Hilliard with a broken leg and both Hangsil of Bmiified and Lowman with cuts and bruises.
Cecil Halley, 38, was fined $800 for a liquor violation and aided police in locating his new address. He led officers to his home at the police headquarters, where a raid yielded a gallon can of alcohol.
Iowa City scientist Professor George W. Stewart heads the University of Iowa physics department. He predicts a new field of hearing using skin stimulation to substitute for ears for totally deaf people.
A series of short postgraduate courses in various phases of dentistry will be inaugurated next week in Iowa City. The program aims to advance clinical practice and dental education through concise modules led by experienced instructors.
Gladys Wilson, 14, is jailed after confessing to Lincoln county Prosecuting Attorney W F Damron that she put poison in a sack of flour at her Hubbell home. The flour poisoned her mother and father and six siblings. she had intended only to harm her mother. Three children have slight chances of recovery, doctors say.
A Naples dock laborer dropped a case of explosives while loading for shipment to East Africa, causing a bomb blast that killed one person and seriously injured four others. The incident occurred today as officials investigated the blast site and security crews cordoned off the area.
Rev CC E Strong of Prairie Flower church will preach Sunday morning at Presbyterian services. There will be no evening service as Presbyterians join the union service at the oar church.
The Journal's official delegate list for the State convention mislisted residence for two delegates. Oscar Davis and J. C. Bauer actually live in the first ward, not the second, causing the second ward to appear overrepresented. Mrs. L. S. Paterson called attention to the error.

Welch and Blatche Weller of Creston.
The College of Dentistry Alumni Association and the dental faculty will host study courses meeting one evening weekly for six to eight weeks in a future Month and April. The program aims to advance continuing education for dental professionals and strengthen alumni ties.
Red Oak area farmers Red Oak George and Glenn Eisel face breaking and entering charges after they hot wired a truck load of hogs to Shenandoah. They bought coal in Imogene and froze en route to Coburg where they entered the Burlington depot waiting room to keep warm. The depot agent J M Waldron reports about 20 dollars missing.
Berniece Breeding from Glenwood travels to Des Moines to meet Gov Cyde Herring regarding a potential commutation for her father Areh Breeding who killed Bernice’s mother in Red Oak and was sentenced to hang after a Supreme Court test.
Mrs Cecile Eunice Robertson died in Washington county hospital at 11 30 PM. Funeral service will be held 2 30 PM tomorrow at Jones funeral home with Rev B F Schwartz officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born March 12 1892 in Ottumwa and married January 1 1912 to John L Robertson. Survivors include two daughters Mary Louise and Marjorie, her mother Mrs Jesse Guy, a sister and a brother.
Iowa will receive more than 682 million dollars in federal aid through 1986, including 135 million in cash bonds and loans. Gifts and benefits total about 326.5 million, with loans around 366.1 million, and farm credit administration and home loan programs providing large parts of the funding.

Funeral services for Mrs Rebecca Fitzgerald formerly of Washington who died in Florida are tentatively set for 10 30 next Wednesday morning at L A Jones funeral home. Rev D Chalmers Fulton of the United Presbyterian church will conduct the service. The funeral party planned to leave for Washington last night.
George Dowell of 748 East Main Street served as a conductor with Rock Island lines for nearly 45 years, totaling 48 years in service. He recalls many funny incidents, including the day a mother forgot her baby at the station and train crews halted the train to reunite mother and child, preserving her peace of mind.
Iowa temperatures rose as weather officials forecast continued warmth through the weekend. Federal forecaster Charlies Reed said western Iowa would enjoy warmer conditions, signaling the end of the cold spell for now. Snow is possible tonight or Sunday with temperatures rising elsewhere. Winterset Iowa February 22 Mep Wwith W. 8. Carney a Year old farmer in a critical condition from a gunshot wound. Ivan Roone 50 was held in jail charged with shooting him. Ottlers said the shooting grew from a quarrel over a road blockade near the show scene. No prior ill feeling between them was reported.
President Roosevelt delivered an address in Philadelphia as he received an honorary Doctor of Jurisprudence from Temple University. He jabbed at political critics during the ceremony, using the moment to frame his defense of his policies.
Funeral services for 94 year old Mrs Catherine Bishop are set for four o’clock this afternoon at L A Jones funeral home. Rev M C Carstenson and Rev C E Strong will conduct the service with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born February 6 1842 in Cumberland County Pennsylvania and moved to Washington County at age 18. She married David Bishop in 1862 and later lived in Eureka Verdi and Lexington before moving to town. Surviving are son Jacob Bishop of Washington and brother D J Eichen berger of Los Angeles. Adon Eberly died September 30, 1933.
