Sigma Chi fraternity won the men’s division and Delta Gamma sorority won the women’s division in the University of Iowa’s annual Sing Fest, edging out more than 25 other student organizations in the event held at Iowa City.
Cold season breaks records as ice near Clinton reaches 40 inches thick, a new all time high. Main channel ice measures 15 to 30 inches, the thickest ever recorded.
Iowa City officials and Mayor Thomas Ix Martin searched the administration office for missing car keys. The mayor borrowed a local garage vehicle while his car was in repair, but the keys remained lost as police offered the Black Maria for a ride home and the garage towed the mayor’s car from the city hall.
The Iowa attorney general ruled that public school teachers must be paid for time schools were closed due to the cold wave and coal shortage. The ruling, sought by state schools superintendent Agnes Samuelson, found that closures ordered by school directors fall outside act of God provisions.
In Waterloo at Montgomery Ward & Co a shipping clerk identified as Bateman was crushed to death when an elevator surged upward trapping him between the car and the shaft wall. The fuse blew and rescuers needed several minutes to free the body.
Empress Menen of Ethiopia dazzled guests at the Iowa City masquerade ball. Emperor Selassie arrived with an umbrella bearer while Otto Vogel, baseball coach, and Mrs. Vogel attended the event.
Martin Norton, a forger, is to be released from the state reformatory at Anamosa next June. Matt D. Cooney, member of the state board of parole, announced the decision.
Investigators recovered more money from the Rose Hill home of Mrs. Jennie Gaston, who died in the blaze. About $3,500 was found in furniture, with an additional $41 discovered among debris and an unestimated amount elsewhere. Funeral services are tentatively set for March 1, pending relatives’ arrival.
Investigation continues into the assault on Ralph Aulmann 17 while canvassing for a city manager plan in Des Moines. He and Roosevelt high school student Robert Hoffman were in a car when an unknown attacker struck Aulmann. He received hospital treatment and was sent home with minor bruises and a concussion.
Snow drifts halted the flight of seven boys who escaped from Independence juvenile home. Residents summoned police when the youths sought aid for a stricken car. Sheriff Englebert arrested them and held them at Marengo jail. Wilma Dodd returns to work after illness in Welman.
Washington county Republicans met to choose 17 delegates and alternates for the state convention in Des Moines next Friday February 28. The list includes Rev R W Filmore Brign ton Bell Wellman and others with a credentials committee chaired by Eardley Bel. 17 of 23 precincts represented while several country districts were snowbound.
Seven dentists attended the county dental meeting on Wednesday night. Dinner was served at the North Side cafe, followed by the regular meeting in the office of Br. M. J. Cruise.
Madrid Feb 21 Premier Zamora approved a government plan for amnesty freeing about 20000 political prisoners to curb riots and bloodshed after protests against detentions of socialist prisoners. The move, likely to pass parliament, follows 16 deaths and previous releases of 5000 prisoners by court decree.
Andrew A. Ferguson, once a Washington resident and early Loveland settler since 1882, died at his Loveland home after two years of failing health. Born in 1845 in Pennsylvania, the family moved to Washington in 1857 where they farmed and later ran a grocery with his father before his Loveland ventures in hardware and farming implements.
Rome reports new Italian advances in the north in a military communique issued today by Marshal Badoglio.
Carl Nisselbeck, a naturalized American and former New York resident, was sentenced in Munich to two years in prison for high treason by importing forbidden literature. Nine months were deducted for time already served awaiting trial. The court noted he acted against the state despite his American citizenship.
Dr David D King of Indianapolis is now associated with Dr A L Braden in Wellman hospital. He earned his MD from Indiana University in 1928 and has done post graduate work at Chicago and Indiana hospitals studying surgery and obstetrics. Several local residents and WPA workers shoveled snow around Horse shoe Bend area as crews clear roads after a winter storm. Cordelle Braden and three others remain in poor condition with several named locals listed as critically ill.
Firefighters were called yesterday afternoon to the G. Schmoeller property two blocks south of city hall where a blaze started in an upper room. Damage was limited as fire was brought under control quickly. The home was the former Alexander property recently purchased by Mr. Schmoeller.
Des Moines reports Governor Clyde Herring called for jail for those who refuse to work and sterilization for chronic defectives. The statement followed the case of James Franks of Cedar Rapids jailed for vagrancy after refusing WPA work.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution outlines heraldic rules for flag display on holidays including Washingtons Birthday. Flags rise sunrise to sunset, must not touch the ground or trail water, and may not advertise. Do not display the flag inverted except as distress. Next display is Mother’s Day.
Mrs. Catharine Bishop died at her home on 1108 North Long Avenue after a brief illness. She celebrated her 94th birthday two weeks ago and was born February 6 1842. Funeral services are expected Saturday at 4 PM at L A Jones Funeral Home. Her husband David Bishop died in 1899.
Mrs Letter Orr, chairman of the Y W C A welfare committee, announces tomorrow is the last day for public distribution of clothing to the needy. Drop donations at the Y between 2 and 4 p m. Special need for boys underwear, stockings, and little girls dresses. The committee, with the county welfare office, has already distributed a large amount to individuals and families.
Nathan Leopold left Joliet State Penitentiary for the first time in eleven years to attend an inquiry into a prison administration scandal tied to the Richard Loeb case. Leopold declined to answer questions and was returned to confinement.

Mrs Rebecca Hay Fitzgerald, born 1863 in Donegal Ireland, died in Milton Florida at nine o'clock this morning. She had lived in Florida and Alabama and after her husband J J Fitzgeralds death moved to stay with her sister Mrs S P Wylie in Washington. Survived by Mrs Wylie brother Mark Hay and sister-in-law Mrs G W Hay. The body will be brought back for burial.

Trenton reports Governor Harold Hoffman prepared to grant a further reprieve to Bruno Richard Hauptmann as his lawyers press for delay. Leibowitz, a New York criminal attorney, argued for postponement while Hauptmann reportedly resisted prior sixteen hours of questioning, informing the governor of a new line of defense.

Ralph Jones has taken over a law practice at Lenox successor to W C Van Houten. He is now opening his office for practice but Mrs Jones and son Richard will join him later. Jones is the son of Mrs Maude Jones of Washington and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in August 1936.
In Istanbul a ten yard long Persian letter from Shah Ismail to Sultan Suleiman has been discovered in the old palace of Appkappu and is placed on display in the museum.
The Prairie Flower community reports the snow plow operated overnight to clear roads, enabling car travel. A one way lane was scooped by tractors and drag teams before the plow widened the routes. A. E. Atchison who has run the shoe business here since 1910 had never sold a pair of shoes when he bought Jim Wotrk’s store 26 years ago. His first location was where the Coast to Coast store now stands.
