Afel Arthur Randall, who last week registered his Ford for the 24th time, did not set a record after learning about earlier vehicles. Harold Masterson reported a 1902 Brush runabout registered at Atlantic, Iowa, that has been in operation for 33 years.
Ames Greenkeepers of Iowa will hold their preliminary instructions on turf management March 4 and 5. The turf culturists attend the annual short course conducted by Iowa State College and the Iowa Greenkeepers Association convention.
Iowa extension economist W Arthur warns farmers about cattle speculators causing losses on light and low grade cattle. He urges buyers to know expected receipts before sale, citing a Town farmer who sold light cattle for 281.18 after a speculator offered 192.53 less. A 1300 pound heifer sold to a speculator for 70 and resold for a 28 profit to dealers before Chicago market.
Des Moines reports show over 1406 measles cases in Iowa last week with 7 scarlet fever cases and 36 chicken pox cases noted by Iowa health commissioner Dr. Walter L. Bierring in the weekly release.
Mrs. Charles Benash of Toledo shows a giant Sacred Lily of India, a 12 inch diameter flower brought from India. The plant is noted for its odor and is exhibited publicly.
Catholics from 14 eastern Iowa counties gather in Davenport for one of two statewide meetings to mobilize action against perceived attacks on civil and religious liberty, citing persecutions of Catholics in Mexico.
Cedar Rapids reports police radioed a stolen car alert and quickly recovered the vehicle. Donald Smith aged 15 and Dee Lantz aged 16, both of Iowa City, were arrested shortly after the alert.
Des Moines collector Charlies D. Huston reports about 6,000 federal income tax returns filed to date with a 25 percent higher total than a year ago. He expects around 69,000 returns by the March 6 deadline.
Admiral Richard E. Byrd will visit Mt. Pleasant for the Iowa Wesleyan College commencement in June if his health allows. President James E. Coons announced the invitation and Thomas C. Poulter, chief scientist with the Byrd Antarctic expedition, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
Des Moines reports numerous Iowa rural schools closed as dirt roads become impassable. State superintendent of public instruction Miss Annes Samuelson announces ongoing closures and notes transportation barriers for students.
Des Moines reports a conference between Governor Herring and 20 county legislators revealed five Iowa counties Monroe Pottawattamie Madison Wayne and Emmet t will be broke by May without relief. Poor tax collections and reduced valuations drive the crisis with plans for bonds and wider discussions among counties.
Washington. The 4.88 billion work relief bill was sent back to the senate appropriations committee as administration leaders seek to remove the prevailing wage clause. The bill, passed by the House, faces Senate delay and possible indefinite enactment.
Winter returned to Washington County on Washington's birthday with several inches of snow. The snow began before daylight and lingered into the afternoon with mild visibilities. Des Moines weather bureau forecast fair and warm weather to follow. Keokuk noted springlike warmth reaching 60 degrees.
Charles Schulty purchased the Noecker estate at 09 North Ave B in an afternoon auction. The residence area property sold for 885 dollars.
The finals of the county rural school declamatory contest will be at 2 PM in Washington high school auditorium. Thirty pupils from five districts compete with six divisions for ribbons and five cent admission to help defray expenses. Three judges preside as district contests spread across the county.
Iowa legislature recessed until March 4 without final action on the salary reduction bill. Debate dragged as administration hopes faded. a proposed amendment by McFarlane would exempt the sheriff and deputies from cuts. Twenty bills were filed, mostly minor statute changes.
Des Moines reports members plan final action on the revised salary reduction act before a 10 day spring recess from Feb 22 to March 4. Senate seats idle as holiday approaches. Investigation committees on liquor commission irregularities and state warrants begin Monday with six members each.
Mrs. Ollie Turner will head the kitchen for the A. M. E. church dinner at the Y M C A. The creamed chicken and trimmings will be served from eleven o’clock, noon seating, with all proceeds from the 25 cent meal supporting the church.

L W Lynch field auditor for the Iowa income tax division will be at Ainsworth most of Saturday to assist with tax return forms. He will be at the bank building. Today Mr. Lynch is at Brighton.
In a high school program, three backstage workers controlled the Happy-Go-Lucky marionettes that charmed children and adults. The 9 inch heroine, Princess Petite, performed with music from a phonograph while Ethel Hanley and assistants handled the action. The act, booked through next spring, includes three weeks in Chicago schools and benefits the YWCA.
Wall Angs quotes Frank Behring of the Sherman as praising a self funding convention for nickel lever games that play marbles for 24 hours a day. He claims the event has replaced golf and stocks as exercise and gambling and notes politicians are drawn from the industry.
Wiley Post, famed around the world aviator, lands at Muroc lake after a forced belly skid landing while attempting a seven hour continental flight. He reports no injuries and says the Winnie Mae is only lightly damaged, with a bent propeller and gear loss at takeoff.
Theodore Bailey spoke at the Methodist Men's club meeting about John Wesley's era versus today. He described the Washington county debt conciliatory board and its work with the AAA to readjust debts and mediate between creditors and debtors. About fifty men attended. a Biblical play was approved for April 24 and 25. a pancake supper is planned for next Tuesday evening at the church.
Orville Foss, formerly connected with the Scott Furniture Company of Washington, is transferring to Fairfield to take a position with another employer in the area.
In Washington on February 22 1936 the labor victory over the administrations wage policy opened possibilities for changes to the 4.88 billion work relief program. The senate reversal unsettled administration leaders and clouded the fate of NRA Wagner 30 hour week measures and other recovery proposals. The Senate debated the work relief bill while a Patman bonus inflation bill gathered over 1000 signatures toward a March 11 vote.
Iowa counties will sell refunding road bonds totaling 31.306 million to achieve lower interest costs. The State Comptroller Murtagh announced daily sales from March 7 to 29 except weekends, with maturities from 1946 through 1949. A sale of 491 900 dollars in Washington county is set for March 13.
Dr Boozer to occupy the pulpit Sunday evening as synodical executive Dr L Myron Boozer a former student pastor at Ames speaks Sunday morning at Sigourney and in the afternoon at Town City in connection with the installation of a new minister in the local church.
Dr Ralph Edwards of Washington has been awarded a year as surgical interne at University hospital in Iowa City. Since graduating from Iowa medical college a year ago he served as general interne and will specialize in surgical work this coming year.
Mr Foss to serve as store clerk and outside salesman at Workies Appliance Shop. He brings wide experience in both roles from recent work in Washington.
