Des Moines. Miss Agnes Samuelson state superintendent of public instruction announced a proposed second state citizens conference on education to be held in the first week of May. The event will discuss the effect of economic conditions on youth.
Plans at Clear Lake include weekly motor boat races and a speaker lineup for the summer featuring Huey Long and Floyd Olson. The Commercial club organizes the events to attract visitors and boost local activity.
Burlington report states Miss Nellie Steece who taught since 1900 collapsed in a junior high gymnasium amid supervising a girls dancing class. Authorities describe the incident as an apoplexy death with no further details given.
Des Moines Iowa voters go to the polls to decide whether the decennial census will be abolished after the Iowa assembly approved the abolition proposal for a second time.
Fairfield city council again debates establishing a municipal electric light plant and seeks voter approval on adopting the proposal for public power.
HIGH directors have been elected by seven Amana villages. Chosen are William Noe Amana Paul Herr Middle Amana Henry Bendorf High Amana Gus Miller West Amana Theodore Setzer South Amana Hy Geiger and Richard Schaefer both of Homestead.
New Hampton reports the state highway commission directs Chickasaw county to refund 219000 dollars of primary road bonds callable on May 1.
Davenport filed a request with PWA engineer P. F. Hopkins at Des Moines for 2,250,000 dollars in public works funds to finance an extensive civic improvement program. Mayor Merle F. Wells said the application was submitted locally.
Milton Henessey of Dubuque sues the Milwaukee railroad for 2999 dollars claiming a railroad detective beat him while he walked through railroad yards with a sack of coal taken from a car.
Fire crews from here and Storm Lake Ia fought the blaze from 2 to 7 pm. The store suffered $40,000 in damage after flames were found in the basement by employees dealing with eggs.
County and state authorities found 1898 dollars in the kitchen of Mrs. Sarah Tracy who was murdered Saturday night. Indications suggest only a small amount was obtained in the robbery.
The federal government sends blue grass seed to Jefferson county schools. Seed comes in six 50 pound bags and will be distributed to Packwood Pleasant Plain Libertyville Lockridge and Bata Fairfield High School.

Senate approved two bills and Hagemann was named to the highway commission as legislative committees plan Monday work.
Des Moines reports the House stole the show from the senate as the lower chamber debates the controversial salary reduction act. Leaders expect no vote on the measure before adjournment tomorrow after days of debate.
Two American sisters Jane and Elizabeth DuBois daughters of Court Dubois United States consul general at Naples died after leaping 4000 feet from a passenger plane in the English countryside. Letters to their father indicated self destruction due to grief over aviator lovers Henry Beatty and John Forbes. The girls aged 20 and 23 had booked a Hillman flight to Paris paying for all seats to be alone.
Washington county dentists met last night at Dr. O F Roller’s office after a monthly dinner at the North Side cafe. A business session led by president Dr Mr Cruise was held with eight members attending. The next gathering is scheduled for Wednesday March 20.
A three member United States Board of Tax Appeals conferred on evidence submitted at a Pittsburgh hearing for Andrew W. Mellon’s appeal against a $3 000 000 income tax levy and penalties from 1931. The board members are Charles Trammell Ernest Van Fossan and B B Turner.
Des Moines February 21 Iowa lawmaker Gustave Alesch says he burned 32 letters offering sensational evidence against the Iowa Liquor Control Commission. The letters were confidential and could not be produced without breaching trust the representative said. The legislative committee chaired by Senator Geske forms to investigate charges and will begin hearings during the upcoming recess. Alesch indicated about ten letters might lead to substantial information, while the rest held doubtful value. He noted he knows only two of the 82 authors.

Kalona won first in the dramatic division of the county declamatory contest held last night in Crawfordsville. Washington took second and West Chester third. Overall rankings across three nights favored Washington with one first and two seconds, Crawfordsville with one first and one third, Kalona with one first, and Ainsworth fourth. Prof. C. C. Warshbarger of the University of Iowa judged. music by Crawfordsville sextet and Catherine Stites sang. Washington debaters return to Iowa City for a state tournament after illness.

President Roosevelt backs a 4.88 billion dollar public works initiative as the first step in a broad plan to conserve and develop national resources. The Mississippi Valley commission and National Resources board urge 105 billion dollars to be spent over 20 years, guided by their joint report. Iowa's Comptroller C. B. Murtagh asked the legislature to appropriate 12,997,580.16 dollars per year for operating state government for the next two years beginning July 1. Henry William Deuker 71 died yesterday afternoon after lifelong residence in Wellman. Funeral Saturday at 2 PM at his home with Rev. Osborn presiding. Burial in Wassonville cemetery. He was a former president of Wellman Savings Bank until January and owned 440 acres. Deuker, born Feb 7 1864, was a leading cattle raiser and lifelong resident.
Acting through a chamber committee George Breitenbach Wise Long and Ralph Scott purchased the Guzeman property on Sou Iowa avenue for remodeling. Frank Miller president of the chamber authorized the purchase. A YMCA meeting supported immediate action with a goal of three weeks to start and two months to complete the modernization. The finished house will be opened to the public as a demonstration of upgrading old homes in line with federal efforts to encourage building.
Clarence Hotle reports a West Chester man in a buggy struck by an automobile. He suffered head and kidney injuries and a fractured skull may be seen on X ray. Despite seriousness, recovery is expected as he is treated at the county hospital.
Iowa Southern Utilities cuts rates for the fifth time in ten years as demand for electricity grows. Frank B. Miller cites expanded appliance use and future business volume, with new salespeople James Schmoeller P EF Wanerus and Mrs Fred Rohrer joining Washington staff alongside veteran Al Ledger and Charles Breitenbach.
In 1885 the will leaves Eliza Hirschler a share, then 1892 grants Candace A. Bull an inheritance who dies July 12 1932. His daughter Mrs George Wright of Holly Colorado is present. Decker belongs to Masonic and Odd Fellows Rebekah lodges in Wellman and the Elks in Iowa City.
