Beverly Hills February report quotes a speaker urging the Red Cross to expand relief into underserved rural areas. The aim is to reach those long forgotten in Depression era hardship to demonstrate the organization's complete duty to assist.
The Better Washington club adopted a new plan of organization selecting a seven member board to choose a president secretary and treasurer from its members. Lloyd Lytle Frank Miller Walter Conner Leslie Dunlap Carl Hedges Lewis Warren and Preston Wolf were named to the board.
Crawfordsville Cyclones face Washington Demons tonight at nine to decide the 1931 Washington County high school basketball championship. Crawfordsville and Washington advanced by defeating Brighton and Kalona in close games this morning, with consolation and title fights to follow.
Muscatine undefeated leads league after final 1921 Little Six games. Burlington beats Fairfield 17 16 in two overtimes. Ottumwa loses to Muscatine 24 16 at Ottumwa while Muscatine sweeps Ottumwa. Washington splits with Fairfield and Ottumwa, beating Burlington twice and losing to Muscatine and Mt. Pleasant.
Nearly all of Washington county's 106 rural teachers gathered at the courthouse for a study center. Prof. H C Moeller and Prof. J W Kauffman of Cedar Falls led talks on county choir work and the teaching of history and civics, with a Q&A session. The event capped eight days of "school service" meetings held at rural schools.
A roof fire at the John McCall home southeast of Havre about 7 o clock this morning was extinguished in time to save the residence. The emergency ring went off immediately and neighbors rushed to assist in putting out the blaze.
President Hoover plans to veto the veterans loan bill after department reports. Treasury Secretary Mellon and Veterans Affairs head Hines weighed the cost, predicting a veto and likely Senate override before March 4. Hines estimates up to a billion dollars could be needed to pay 75 percent of $3.4 million in World War I veterans claims. Mrs J W Patton suffered a slight stroke at about 6 20 this morning.
Lincoln School remains unbeaten after topping Centennial Thursday night in a 4 to 3 final. Wallace defeated Heights 9 to 5, adding another victory on the program’s ledger.
Irene Schroeder and W Glenn Dagne, convicted killers of Patrolman Brady Pant, were moved from Lawrence County jail to Rock View penitentiary near Bellefonte, to face execution on Monday. Schroeder will be the first woman executed there as preparations proceed, with the pair separated in the death house.
Two Washington men Charles M. Denison and Dale Gallagher plan a modern tourist camp with cabins an eating stand and a Mid Continent service station on four and a half lots near West Madison street at primary roads 1 and 2. They expect possession by March 1 and aim to serve automobile travelers at nominal rates. The Better Washington club had previously sought a camp project.
A historic tourist camp further west on the main road has fallen into disrepair and neglect, drawing community feeling that it is a disgrace to the area.
The Iowa House passed a state income tax measure by 82 to 4, proposing a graduated rate of 1 to 5 percent for individuals and a 3 percent flat tax on corporations. Mrs Minnie Jugenheimer Ellerbrock died at her Sawtelle home near Los Angeles after a yearlong illness. Funeral services are set for Tuesday in Fremont Nebraska with burial there. Survived by two sons Orville Scotts Bluff and Byron Los Angeles, two daughters Mrs Bessie Graham, and several brothers and a sister.
The court sustains state contentions that Baker, once cleared in district court, is guilty of practicing medicine without a license. Baker recently launched an evening paper in Muscatine the Muscatine Free Press and owns radio station KTNT.
