Des Moines man Bd Roberts was named assistant secretary of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, replacing John W. Beck who resigned after purchasing a local sporting goods store. Roberts is a State University of Iowa graduate, class of last June.
In Rockwell City Mrs. Les ter Yeazel, 35, sustained serious burns when stove polish she used exploded. Her daughter Betty, 9, ran half a mile for help as Mrs. Yeazel rolled in snow to extinguish flames.
Carol Cirkus, 3, of Gilmore City, is in serious condition at Lutheran hospital after a .22 rifle discharged during a game at the Cirkus farm. The incident occurred at the family home as several children were playing with the rifle.
Cedar Rapids region report says Virle Augustine, 28, Center Point, leaped from the cab of his truck two miles south of Palo to escape a Rock Island passenger train. The vehicle carried half a box of dynamite but had no detonators. Augustine was alone and uninjured.
Des Moines hosted a special concert by the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra for 3,800 local children after weeks of study of famous symphonies. The youngsters recognized the selections without programs and left the venue humming and whistling. Each student paid 20 cents.
Thirty five of Iowa s best checker players competed in a round robin event by the Iowa Checker association in Cedar Rapids with the tournament slated to run to Wednesday. Ralph Kennedy of Cedar Rapids was chosen president replacing T O Hawk of Ottumwa and Al J Graettinger of Graettinger was named vice president. Last year s co champions George Huber of Blakesburg and Bobby Martin of Ottumwa are among the players in this year s event.
Gil Christ, owner of two beauty establishments and a 440acre farm near Otho, filed in Webster County District Court for a writ of mandamus to compel the Fort Dodge Telephone Co to install a telephone at his farm home. He says the company removed his farm telephone on February 6 and gave notice it was discontinuing service as unprofitable.
Six hundred students evacuated orderly as fire broke out in the Eagle Grove High School basement. The blaze caused minor overall damage, but much equipment including most athletic gear and band instruments were damaged or lost. Water flooded the gym and cafeteria during firefighting efforts.
Washington County tuberculosis association met at North Side cafe to review 1939 Christmas seat sales totaling 1001.84 dollars, with countywide totals and parish reports led by Mrs. Leslie Gates. Dr C A Boice outlined a new monthly x ray program and 250 chest radiographs yearly to improve follow up.
Pp Members of a CIO affiliated farm implement workers union walked out at the J. J. Case plant in Rock Island. Police arrived after several fist fights to allow workers through the picket lines. Emil Costello, union field representative, was arrested for questioning. No injuries were reported.
A fresh snow storm blankets Iowa with trace to 4 inches across the state. Des Moines reports five inches while Audubon records five. Roads blocked in Audubon county and northwest highways covered. Two fatal accidents attributed to the storm claim Mrs Edward Kane and Charles Melnish.
New York dispatch reports a second storm in six days bringing snow wind and rain from the south creating ankle deep slush along parts of the eastern seaboard.
The weather observer reports yesterday and last night’s snowfall contained 0.25 inches moisture. The temperature ranged from 35 to 29 degrees.
Lester H. Orr was re elected president for his third year at the Washington Golf and Country Club. V Crull was re elected vice president, Will Harwood secretary and treasurer. Holcomb named caretaker and grounds keeper. to move to Washington in March and begin duties March 16.
Twelve new cars and trucks were licensed in Washington county in the past week, bringing the month total to 25 for the first three weeks. County plates now number 4 675 for cars and 699 for trucks, well ahead of last year. Owners listed include R. C. Scott in Washington with a Studebaker truck and Cloyce Stoutner in West Chester with a Plymouth two door sedan, among others from Wellman and Washington.
Raymond Moley, early New Deal brain trust member, told Grinnell College students the middle west drifts away from the Democratic administration and a Republican victory may follow. He framed politics as motives and practices of politicians with few direct policy takes.
Safecrackers access two Des Moines churches and loot at least $650 after forcing open safes. Grace Methodist church reports losses over $400 per Rev. Thomas Gallagher, while Plymouth Congregational cites about $250 per Harry G. Wallace. Insurance covers both losses.
Brighton health unit reports five scarlet fever cases in the community with three involving preschool children. All patients are isolated to prevent spread while health officials conduct dispersal measures. Blood tests for syphilis were also performed at local schools and a film titled With These Weapons was shown to students yesterday.
John A. Wallbank of Mr Pleasant first district census supervisor travels to Washington to handle census business. County residents seeking census taker jobs must contact Wallbank for application blanks. One taker per ward and per precinct will be appointed. Leslie Gates named industrial enumerator for Washington has started duties.
The Girl Reserves organized a Sunday evening program at the YMCA with a song service and prayer led by a girl. Florence Godwin read scripture as the high school brass sextet performed On the Mountain. A boys and girls contest ended with a draw.

Des Moines cleaners from Iowa Missouri and Nebraska attended a three day short course to view a new cleaning gadget that supposedly cleans everything but fish. Over 260 participants enrolled in the event and exhibits sponsored by the State Association of Cleaners and Dyers.
The cabinet in Ankara invokes the national defense law tightening currency rules and travel as observers note potential lightning action. The decision follows a Supreme Army Council meeting in Ankara amid regional tensions and a broader near eastern security climate.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong announced the office will observe Washington's Birthday Thursday February 22 as a holiday. No mail will be delivered that day though the stamp window will be open for stamp sales only from eight to ten in the morning.

Funeral services for Mrs Sal lome Darbyshire were held yesterday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home conducted by Dr J W Eastwood. Pall bearers were Don Dale and Claire Darbyshire Glen Thompson Doyle Jarrard and Jay Brown. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.
