Police said two juveniles aged 15 and 16 confessed to a string of burglaries over several months. They admitted further break ins in Cedar Rapids and Washington, including University of Iowa buildings, fraternity and sorority houses, a hospital, and several homes.
Grinnell insiders announce Clarence Strelt author of Union Now and advocate of a world federation of democracies will be among speakers at the Grinnell Institute of International Relations on the Grinnell campus from June 12 to 22, per institute secretary Max W Burke.
Iowa City hosts the annual State University of Iowa speech tournament on Feb 29 March 1 and 2 with contests in debate oratory discussion extempore speaking and after dinner speaking. The debate tournament will include six rounds. Prof A Craig Baird is tournament director.
Chariton resident CHARITON RALEPH STEWART, about 28, serving a life term for the murder of 72 year old Mrs Rebekah Botkin, is approved for parole. He may leave Fort Madison Penitentiary in April when a Chariton job is promised. he had confessed around his trial, but the 1938 parole board found the confession plausible due to chivalry.
A Waterloo man, Paul Moorhouse, 36, told officers he was Stewart Moorehouse and was held on breaking and entering charges at Hubbard Lee Co. office. He was found bleeding by Watchman Emil Serove after requesting police. The office appeared undisturbed. He recalled only arriving with two companions from a canvassing firm and drinking whisky with an unknown person.
The Modernistic Beauty Studio now operates under Pearl Hamil Dusenbery and Marie Welch with fresh furnishings while service and prices stay the same. Dusenbery has years with the studio and Welch joined in October after leaving Powder Puff Beauty Shop in Cedar Rapids and the Vogur of Mt. Pleasant. The studio sits on the east side of the square next to RobAir shoe store.

Washington county voters will decide on June 3 whether to issue bonds to fund a new jail. The move follows urging from county grand juries across terms and a plan by Des Moines architects Dougher Rich Woodburn to provide 18 to 20 inmate capacity and possible additions to the sheriff’s residence.
Washington County alumni and former students receive mailed invitations for the University of Iowa alumni banquet set for Thursday February 29. Local leaders distribute tickets across Kalona Riverside Crawfordsville Wellman Brighton Ainsworth and chairwoman Martha Foster leads the committee. Lincoln school hosts dinner at 6 30 pm with Dr Karl E Harper as keynote speaker and mixer stunts planned. Lillian Endicott travels to Savanna Illinois to visit G O Mercer.

Dr. Ethan Colton spoke to a full high school audience outlining international realities for America to weigh. He assessed Germany as industrious and thrifty with large savings, warned against underestimating their resolve, and noted leadership propaganda shaping German ambitions.
Joseph V. Beranek aged 80 died at 4 15 am in his home ten miles northeast of Washington after two years illness. Born August 24 1860 in Bohemia he moved to America at 14 and lived in Jackson township. Survived by six sons one daughter 146 grandchildren and three great grandchildren four sisters and one brother. Funeral Thursday at Riverside Methodist Church with burial in Riverside cemetery. Funeral arrangements by L A Jones.
The court house will be closed Thursday February 22 in observance of Washington's Birthday legal holiday.
In New Orleans on February 21 Sam Huston Jones, a reformist newcomer, won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, defeating Gov. Earl K. Long. The result ends Huey Long's political era as rural votes swept the rural state, with Louisiana’s nomination seen as decisive in this party system.
A major blast at the Fosse fireworks company in Elkton Maryland destroyed two buildings and was felt miles away. Initial reports said several workers were killed and many injured prompting an emergency hospital appeal and aid from Wilmington Delaware and surrounding cities. The plant lies about one mile north of Elkton.
In Rock Island Illinois on February 21 twenty five officers and deputies guarded the J I Case company plant to prevent further clashes between union pickets and back to work group members. Police said about one hundred pickets were present.
Joseph E. Mayott, 65, Los Angeles, battles a divorce from his wife as a rare disease causes him to shrink from five feet seven inches to four feet three inches. He stands beside reporter Claude Kimball during the court session.
At the Leon Beatty post American Legion meeting plans were continued for an industrial show to be held at the new armory in mid March for three days. A committee led by Harry Simpson will arrange booth space for businesses and labor groups, with expanded display areas including automobiles and farm machinery beyond prior city hall shows. Guards were placed on alert during shift changes as workers at the plant near the strike were present.
Swedish Parliament backs government on aid to Finland amid criticism of PM Hansson. In Pajala, Russia bombed a church town, damaging the church and destroying several houses. Moscow reports say the Red Army plans to break the Mannerheim line as the Viipuri area gears for a major battle.
Des Moines reports the state parole board freed two bank robbers Harold Ball of Independence and Clifford Baird of Shambaugh along with accomplice Herman R. Wall of Davenport and Ralph Stewart, already serving life for murder, after interviewing 150 inmates at February hearings. Paroles take effect April first.
