Cedar Rapids officials said the estate of Hazel Johnson will provide property valued over 800000 to Coe College. Part of the funds will endow the biology program while the rest will support college operations.
The Iowa Commerce Commission rejected Iowa Power and Light Co. bid to condemn land for a 124 mile high voltage line from Council Bluffs to Booneville. The commission upheld farmers' charge that not all affected landowners were notified of a public hearing.
Iowa officials report total unemployment insurance payments rose to 13.9 million in January, up 2.2 million from December. Job Service experts point to significant gains in construction and related trades, especially stone, clay, glass and concrete, with a 65 percent month over month increase largely due to seasonal weather effects.
Tokyo University scientists at the Institute of Space and Aeronautical Sciences report a 295 pound satellite placed in orbit by a three stage rocket from the Uchinoura space center. The craft orbits between 2,443 and 512 miles from Earth. The rocket stands 78 feet long and weighs 49 tons.
The Iowa Senate approved 418000 for a computerized budgeting system after a near party stalemate. Democrats used filibuster and caucus strategy to secure 26 votes, aided by Sen.
