Senate Debates 65-Foot Twin Trailer Trucks in Iowa
The Iowa Senate opened full scale debate on 65 foot twin trailer trucks and rejected a bid to summon DOT Commission members to explain the Jan. 17 rule keeping the limit at 60 feet. Senator James Redmond argued for a committee of the whole to hear testimony from DOT officials. Opponents called the bid political stall tactics. A House measure by Rep. Carl Nielsen would void the Jan. 17 ruling and preserve the 60 foot limit despite a pending Iowa Supreme Court challenge. Senator Richard Drake urged swift passage to show the issue alive, citing DOT projections of 75,000 more trucks annually and potential economic gains of 145 million dollars over 20 years plus over 25 million dollars yearly in new fees and taxes.

One-car Crash Injures Two in Riverside Area
Lloyd Wallace Lillie 17 of West Chester suffered head injuries when he was thrown from his car on County Road W-61 after losing control on a curve. Passenger John Russell Robert 17 was less seriously hurt. Sheriff’s deputies estimated $1,200 in damage as the car rolled repeatedly before resting on its top. both teens were hospitalized.

Villages Slid Into Ground in Yugoslavia
In southeastern Yugoslavia near Vranje, two villages Jovac and Ostrovica were undermined by rain and snowmelt, sliding into the earth.
