Snowy Owls Invasion Sighted Across Iowa Counties
Pleasantville ornithologist Gladys Black reports 177 snowy owls sighted in 72 Iowa counties this winter. She calls the Arctic invasion the largest of the century and says she has contacted Canadian bird watchers to study causes. Three birds have been shot, and owls are protected by state and federal law.

Tragic Highway Crash Claims Young Harper Woman
Sheryl Jean Clarahan a 22 year old Harper resident died Thursday evening at University Hospital Iowa City after a highway 92 crash one mile west of Harper. Her car was struck by a compressor detached from a towed pickup and pinned beneath the overturned load. She worked as a secretary at Keokuk County Hospital Sigourney. Funeral Monday at St Elizabeths Harper with rosary Sunday at Powell Funeral Home Keota. Burial St Elizabeths Cemetery. Surviving are her parents four brothers and a sister. She was born Sept 27 1954 in Sigourney.

Five year suspended term for thief DeLay in Iowa case
Max D. DeLay, 20, was given a five year prison term suspended and three years probation after a jury convicted him of larceny in the theft of currency from Dale French's rural Washington home.
