A Pleasantville couple faced a fatal sequence after warnings of terminal illness. Bert Richards 74 attacked his wife 70 with a hatchet and bottle as she tried to call for help. He then slashed his own throat, deputies said, near their home west of Pleasantville after a long marriage celebration.

Tragic Fire Claims Four Doubek Children Near Waukon
Four children of Mr and Mrs Anthony Doubek died in a Friday afternoon fire that destroyed their wooden shack twelve miles north of Waukon. Elizabeth six Franklin four Albert three and Lawrence two perished in the blaze. Mrs Doubek about 28 discovered the fire from a nearby trailer where she was washing. Neighbors aided by fetching water from a washing machine after the pump could not be primed.

Des Moines state agents arrested Lester W. Snell as he left Railway Express with three trunks holding 72 quarts of Illinois whisky. Snell pleaded innocent before Judge Ralph L.
