An infantry officer, Bird rose from captain to lieutenant colonel, earned a Silver Star for Tunisia, and lost two fingers in Italy. He claims letters of endearment from his wife continued until April 1942, then she admitted loving someone else.

DES MOINES the state conservation commission said Thursday that 318 beaver were trapped legally in the 1948 44 season the first time this was permitted and that taking more than twice that many would be authorized next season.
