A Council Bluffs Nonpareil straw ballot shows 6 210 to 1 266 against making the city a wide open town. Of 3 675 returned ballots 3 149 were by men and 3 323 by women. Other results include dog races and liquor questions with clear majority opposition and a plan to comply with state law receiving 25 yes and 634 no.
Wendell Willkie greeted about 2,500 Iowans at a Hotel Fort Des Moines reception on Sunday afternoon. The crowd included diverse attendees such as gray-haired women, farmers, soldiers, professors, and ministers, with Mrs. Willkie and local Republican officials nearby.
A hearing on wages and a closed shop contract will be held today at the Ottumwa post office building. The dispute is between the Yorkshire Creamery Co and its employees, members of the United Packinghouse Workers. The regional War Labor Board in Kansas City, Missouri, announced the proceedings.
John Davison 45 of Brighton died this afternoon at the county hospital after a period of illness. He was a farmer and trucker, husband of Grace Pratt formerly of Washington, and father of several children. Funeral services set for 2 PM at Cottonwood Church south of Coppock.
John Melillo asked police to locate his wallet containing $45 and his license. Officers found it at a Brooklyn gas station and arrested him after the owner identified him as one of three men who robbed the station. He was sent to a county hospital for observation.
Moscow dispatch reports a multi directional Soviet push toward the Dno rail junction east of Pskov as blizzards slow German defense. The Soviet press cites a captured doctor confirming Hitler ordered severely wounded German troops destroyed to avoid hindering fighting men.
Allied forces regained about half of a 4000 yard Nazi salient south of Aprilia on the Anzio beachhead as German counterattack losses mounted. German troops reportedly fell back under air and ground bombardment, with over 700 prisoners captured and heavy equipment losses noted along the road to Anzio.
Mrs. Mary Green widow of Miles Green 85 died early Sunday in Washington county hospital from severe burns suffered when she blocked a stove in her Keota home. Neighbors Edna Hudson and Mrs. Ralph Romine found her as most clothing had burned. She leaves a daughter Mrs. J C Stoutner and her spouse who are visiting in Seattle Washington.
At yesterday morning service in Washington United Presbyterian Church an offering for the denomination's college emergency fund totaled 528 dollars. Earlier offerings brought the congregation's total to 428 dollars matching the church's request. Dr M Earle Collins Tarkio College president spoke on emergency gifts while noting wartime declines in male student enrollments.
Charles van Walligan of Gresham Oregon believed someone was stealing stock when a car and trailer appeared by his pasture fence. He investigated and found 14 pigs dumped at his property and took them in to raise with his 200 hogs.

Mrs. Mary Green born Mary Shaffer in Three Rivers Michigan on March 18 1858 died recently and funeral plans await arrival of her children. Burial will be in Keota cemetery with services led by the Christian church pastor. She married Miles Green in 1878 and lived near Kinross Iowa before moving to Keota about 40 years ago. Her husband died in 1926 and they had four children two daughters died in infancy a son Charles died in 1940. She leaves seven grandchildren six great grandchildren and a brother John Shaffer of Kinross.
Japanese authorities announced changes at the top of the army and navy after the Truk raid and the Eniwetok atoll invasion. Premier Hideki Tojo became army chief and navy minister, while Shipetaro Shimada took the navy post. Sugiyama and Nagano were relieved of their duties with no immediate replacements named.
Captain Miller and Lieutenant Arnold resign their commissions in the Washington headquarters troop of the first battalion Iowa State Guard. Lieutenant Kephart assumes command temporarily as Major Reiley arrives for the weekly drill to address filling the two vacancies. Red and blue tokens gain value changes, with red stamps A8 B8 C8 and blue stamps A8 B8 C8 D8 K8 becoming valid Feb 27 and worth ten points each, while green and brown stamps retain prior values until March 20.
About 2,060 American planes joined a second day of mass attacks on Germany, matching Sunday’s scale that crippled Hitler’s air production. U S and Royal Air Force raids hit Stuttgart and northwest Germany, with 126 German planes downed the previous day and 24 American aircraft missing.
