Job Service of Iowa reports Washington County unemployment rose to 3.2 percent in December with 280 jobless out of an 8,610 labor force. November showed 3.0 percent with 270 unemployed out of 9,110. Statewide December rate was 4.7 percent, below the national 7.9 percent.
The Highland Patrons for Educational Betterment will hold its first meeting at the Highland School building on Monday February 21 at 7 30 p m Supt Dennis Bush will attend and share information about the organization and its goals The meeting is open to any interested resident of the Highland Community School District.
Washington area residents are urged to support Troop 242 as it opens its annual candy sale on Thursday February 17. The fundraiser is the main money making project for the year, financing troop equipment and summer camp expenses for local Scouts.
The Youth Theatre division of Washington Community Theatre holds a session Saturday from 2 to 3 30 p.m. at the Community Center. Open to students in grades 3 through 9 with a 25 cent admission fee. Attendees will tour backstage and view two scenes from Life With Father.
Iowa State Fair Board officials say they will continue granting board members free tickets to grandstand events during the fair. The board voted Wednesday to reduce the number of free tickets and to seek an attorney general's opinion on the legality of accepting the tickets.
Waterloo resident Richard Pugh woke to a smelly surprise when an unknown prankster smuggled a skunk into his parked car overnight. The trapped skunk released its odor, creating an unpleasant scene in Waterloo.
The Willard Williams family lost nearly all belongings in a recent fire and residents may donate clothing and essentials at the Washington Fire Station, Washington Municipal Building. Needed items include girls’ clothing size 14, boys’ size 14 slim, women’s size 18, men’s 36-31 pants or 15-15½ shirts, plus bedding. Donors call 3-2239 or 3-5821 for details.
The Washington County Mini Bus Program plans a March 25 to 27 Chicago charter visiting Drury Lane Dinner Theater McCormick Place Flower Show Chinatown tour and a Chicago overview with free time. Essex Inn on Michigan Avenue hosts forty seven passengers with reservations at 653 2853. Other trips include February 25 Wellman Tour with dinner, February 28 Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, March 4 Muscatine and Davenport, and Life With Father show rides February 23 and 25 with bookings due February 22.
The high school concert presents Michael Hennagin's The Family of Man a sound drama using semi structured pitch notation and many soloists. Highlighted performers include Bob Boyd Linda Bush Kent Keating Debby Johnson Brenda Palmer Gail Colby Carrie Mineart Sheryl Miller Barb Larsen Jenny Harris Jo McClure Roger Chalupa Jim Dayton John Elliott Terry Little Donna Davisson Karen Ruppert Sherrie Liechty Mary Beth Wittetoe and more. The event also includes Hi-Fi medleys and a Noah and the Ark mini epic with multiple soloists and a large percussion section. The Tuesday February 22 8 pm show in the high school auditorium costs 150 for adults and 1 for students.
Washington report says natural gas producers on the Gulf Coast are delivering gas slowly with only about 10 percent of identified reservoirs producing. Interior Secretary Cecil Andrus orders a comprehensive review after examining four fields. Investigators note reserves idle could total nearly 1 trillion cubic feet and production in three fields exceeds typical offshore patterns.
Weather brief notes clear tonight and mild Friday with highs in the low 40s and tonight’s low in the upper teens. Andrus said the Thursday report is only a preliminary check and urged a more thorough Interior Department review to ensure gas from the outer continental shelf is produced safely and efficiently. The key findings show 188 reservoirs reported 757.3 billion cubic feet of gas in 1974, but only 19 were in production by end of 1976. three fields show steep declines, including a 26.3 percent annual drop, with 1976 production well below maximum and efficient recovery rates.
Secretary of State Cyrus Vance met Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi for two hours in Cairo to pursue renewed Middle East peace negotiations this year. Egyptian and Israeli officials agree on a conference this year but differ on form timing and PLO participation. Vance planned further talks with President Sadat after discussions in Jerusalem and with Yasser Arafat.
Cedar Falls police say Donovan Bass aged 19 and L T Jones 26 are in custody on robbery with aggravation charges tied to Monday armed robbery of six University of Northern Iowa students in their dorm room. Bond set at 25000 each. Officers seek two additional suspects.
A four-alarm fire fed by a broken gas main raged downtown Columbus near the State Capitol. More than 100 firefighters fought the blaze in subzero weather as it spread from an underground tavern to a card shop, apparel store, wig shop and newstand. Crews battled gas leaks and ice while cordoning off streets and using snorkel trucks and rescue units.
Mrs John Simmering 78 of 319 East Washington Street died from injuries after a car struck her while crossing East Washington Street Wednesday morning. Donald Reschly of Washington was driving. no charges filed. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm at Jones Funeral Home with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. She leaves five children, 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and siblings.
Attorney General Griffin Bell told President Carter that at least six present or former congressmen will be indicted over an alleged South Korean influence peddling scheme. The Washington Post cites Justice Department sources predicting four to six indictments within months as a grand jury probes cash and gifts totaling up to $1 million yearly since 1970 to sway congressional action.
The Department of Agriculture launches WIC to aid mothers infants and children in Washington County. Pregnant women nursing mothers and children from infancy to five years may receive monthly coupons for iron fortified foods to address dietary deficiencies and anemia. Monthly clinics at Public Health Nursing Service will assess eligibility by income medical testing and nutrition evaluation with Mildred Lee and Rita Sojka overseeing.
