Burglars broke into the Drug Fair building on West Madison Street Tuesday night causing damage to merchandise and shelving. Police say entry was gained through an east doorway and damage is about $600. Cash and drugs missing are being tallied in ongoing investigations.
Tena Simmering, 78, of 319 East Washington Street, was struck by a car near the Jack & Jill Grocery entrance at 8:50 a.m. She was taken to Washington County Hospital and then to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for head and ankle injuries. The driver, Donald Reschly of Washington, said he did not see her due to traffic and sun glare as he left the grocery lot and turned east.
Teachers across Washington Community District will attend an all-day in service on Monday February 21 with no student classes. The morning gathering at the junior high will feature presentations on The Heart of Teaching followed by small discussion groups. Afternoon sessions occur in each school building with staff attending their own meetings.
The Wayland Mennonite Home Association board invites the public to an open house at Parkview Apartments on Sunday February 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. The six unit apartment with lounge is located on the northeast corner of the Parkview Home lawn.
Robert T. Griffin, longtime federal official and ally of Speaker O'Neill, was named acting General Services Administration administrator by President Carter on Tuesday, moving up after the resignation of GSA chief Jack Eckerd. The 33 year veteran takes temporary charge of the agency.

Consumer expert Charlotte Young cites a General Mills survey showing 54 percent of families cutting living standards as inflation bites. Costs rise from 9 800 in 1974 to 15 200 in 1976 for a four person family while average income sits at 12 000.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled Des Moines Councilman Timothy Urban can keep his seat after relying in good faith on City Clerk Margaret Vernon's interpretation of petition signatures. The decision cites a 1973 change from 2 percent of votes for the last election to 2 percent of those who voted for the office.
A group of elderly Iowans visited the Des Moines Statehouse to urge lawmakers to fund more than $800,000 to aid about 22 000 SSI households with an extra 40 to cover January and February heating bills. Lois Schreck, on SSI, said her income is 167 and her current bill is 63 as bitter cold raises costs.
Washington County Extension Service reports 667 participants at nine pesticide applicator training sessions last week. 487 county farmers qualified, 149 from outside, with 52 from Johnson and 40 from Keokuk counties. Fee is $5. certificate numbers will be issued after form submission. Effective date is October 21, 1977. restricted-use chemicals list pending.
West central Iowa faces unusually high subsoil moisture risk threatening FCIC crop insurance with possible discontinuation of new applications. Des Moines regional office says policy holders remain covered. 17 northwestern counties already halted new sales. Final decision rests with Washington DC officials. about 31,000 Iowa farmers insured in 1976, with 90 percent expected to renew. Counties cut off include Lyon Osceola Dickinson Emmet Sioux O'Brien Clay Palo Alto Plymouth Cherokee Buena Vista Woodbury Ida Sac Monona Crawford Harrison.
