Waterloo Milton Roth aged 20 received the Representative DeMolay award becoming the second recipient in Waterloo DeMolay history. The honor highlights ongoing DeMolay activities in the city.
Shenandoah Charles Banks aged 84 died from injuries after a log fell and struck his stomach while sawing wood. Born in Holmsted Sweden he had farmed in the area for 63 years.
The Amana Society reports 1937 net sales up 23 percent supported by higher prices. Payroll rose to 273,803 dollars, a 26 percent increase, reflecting broader growth in the year.
Edward G. Uhl 45 longtime Iowa State college shepherd died from complications after a fall from his roof Sunday. Services will be at Bethesda Lutheran church with burial at Ames cemetery.
Marshalltown. City engineer KF E Naiden reports after investigations that suffocation appears to be the chief cause of thousands of fish deaths in Cherry lake Tama. Naiden said he was asked by the Tama city council to examine the incident.
Ottumwa reports coroner Gordon Traul's jury exonerated the Milwaukee freight crew after the crash that killed William Tee, Jr., a brakeman, ruling the incident unavoidable. Tee's father William Tee, Sr. also worked on the same train.

A Wilton Junction blaze at the H. J. Lenker home started by spilled kerosene igniting as Lenker lit a fire. A 43 year old woman died and five other family members sustained burns while two girls ages 14 suffered serious injuries trying to save a infant.
University of Iowa students in Saturday courses have three more classes to complete. The last Saturday classes are scheduled for March 26 with an eighth meeting next Saturday and remaining dates March 5 and March 26. They are enrolled in 53 courses across 19 departments.
Estherville Anton Roben, a 54 year old farmer, named two former Sioux City convicts as members of a group that swindled him out of his life savings in a poker game last month. Emmet County Attorney Harry Coffie filed information charging swindling against Be C Bonner and Ray Hughes. They are at large.
ALBIA Mrs Ruth Hollings head of Albia entered the democratic race for congress in the fifth district. Her candidacy is the third for the nomination joining George Purdock Oskaloosa mayor and Roy Stevens Ottumwa state senator. She is the first Iowa woman to announce for a U S house seat this year although Ellsworth Richardson seeks the senate nomination.
Fifty petit jurors were drawn for the March term of district court to open Monday March 14 with Judge P G Siegers of Newton presiding. Jurors report on the second Monday afternoon unless notified otherwise, listing names from various wards and towns.
Ruth Alice Stewart daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred D Stewart north of town has passed her probation period in nurses training at University hospital Iowa City and has been accepted as a full fledged nursing student.
A Detroit jury returned a not guilty verdict for 20 year old Margaret Tack in the murder trial of Lloyd McCardy her sweetheart. The defense claimed McCardy refused marriage after she believed she was about to become a mother.
Iowa reports January hog totals at 7,504,000 up 15 percent from last year while cattle and sheep also rise. Pig crop similar to 1937, more sows to farrow in spring. cattle and other stock up nine percent overall. In Suanghail Marines win a verbal victory forcing Japanese patrols from the international settlement after repeated clashes.

The official observer reports 0.42 inches of rain last night with a high of 34 and a low of 30 degrees. Some Iowa areas saw ice glare, but conditions remained warm locally. Snow is forecast tonight with colder weather tomorrow. Heavy snows hit northern Iowa yesterday and last night.
Chairman Roger Sherman announced the Washington County Red Cross annual meeting will be held at the YMCA next Tuesday evening at 7 30. Reports will be presented and officers elected for the next year with other business as needed. The session was postponed from this evening due to conditions.

He has worked in the county auditor’s office since 1928 and is viewed as well qualified. Two more Republican candidates are expected in June. A missionary and prayer band convention is scheduled February 22 and 28 at the First Baptist Church in Oska loosa. Rev. Harry Adkins, a returned missionary from Africa, will give daily missionary and devotional messages under the National Holiness Missionary society. Motion pictures of the mission field will be shown Tuesday evening. Everyone is cordially invited.
Mrs Robert Lemon, 77, died at 6 45 yesterday evening at 733 East Washington street after years of heart trouble. Her husband died in June 1918. A sister Miss Eliza Billick lives here. Body taken to L A Jones funeral home. Burial likely at Riverside.
Stutzman of Wayland pleaded guilty to larceny of a domestic animal and was sentenced by Judge J. G. Patterson to not more than five years in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison. Sheriff Putnam planned to take him to prison that afternoon after a psychopathic hospital report found him sane. He admitted stealing cattle and hoes from the Magdefran farm north of Wayland and selling them in Washington.
The Iowa audit shows Fort Madison prison’s total operating cost for the year ending June 30, 1937 at 370,602.12, down 42,075.16 from the prior year, with an average cost per prisoner of 245.27, and a reported 33,120.26 profit from prisoner industries including textiles, chair and furniture, shoes, and spinning. The farm, broom and brush, and quarry units posted losses, and officials urged metering for utilities and the quarry to be sold and written off.

George Graham and James Thompson of Ottumwa were captured in Knoxville Iowa after a dawn stand off with police. Two machines guns and several revolvers were seized and their two young wives were taken into custody. The pair had eluded authorities after a Osceola burglary and were linked to crimes from Davenport to Council Bluffs.
