The ransacking of St Marys church and parish residence was reported to police by Rt Rev J M Walsh pastor. Thieves who searched the church study and residence obtained 38 dollars in cash.
Voters approved a 50000 dollar bond to fund an eighty thousand dollar high school addition with a vocational arts building. Four hundred ten opposed while one thousand fifty five supported. A federal WPA grant of thirty thousand dollars has been applied for.
In Marshall county the relief costs for January totaled 12 186 dollars, up 2 682 from December, as welfare director Howard C Sanders notes. In Iowa City F F Bowman reported bounty payments for 67 starlings and five crows, receiving 6 70 for the starlings and 50 cents for the crows after his children trapped them.
Paul Ramker, 14, of East Waterloo junior high, was missing since Monday and returned Thursday. He and 15 year old Laverne Brown allegedly removed 105 dollars in cash and 99 dollars in checks from a filing cabinet, spent the money, and tore up the checks. They separated in Cedar Rapids Wednesday.
Edward Merchant was found guilty by a district court jury of obtaining property under false pretense. He represented Fairfield Directory Co and operated in Webster City claiming to publish a city directory, taking money for ads and publication fees, but the directory was never printed.
Problems of peace will be discussed at the first intercollegiate peace institute at the University of Iowa Friday through Sunday. Prof Jacob Van Der Zee and Rabbi Eugene Mannheimer will outline peace issues, with foreign students from eight nations discussing their countries. Representing schools include the University of Dubuque Coe Cornell Central Parsons Grinnell Penn Drake Simpson Yowa State College Iowa Wesleyan and the University of Iowa.
Mrs. Thomas Smith died at the home of her niece Mrs James Colton two miles east of Haskins after a lingering illness. The service will be at the Christian church in Nichols with burial in Nichols cemetery. Born November 28 1872 near Columbus Junction she married Thomas Smith December 19 1892 and had one son Ray. Survived by husband son two brothers and three sisters with several relatives.
County spelling contest for upper and lower grades will be held at the court house Saturday starting at ten. Winners advance to the state contest in Des Moines on April 23. Participants include Mildred Morgan Arlys Myers Arlene Churchill Norma Rose Kos Ruth Applete Walter Kron Martha Hines Delmar Romine Geneva Bean Delmar Romine and many others from rural and town schools.
In Rodessa Louisiana a tornado killed at least 22 people and injured more than twenty. Officials and relief workers rushed to aid the injured amid muddy roads and looting concerns. Twelve bodies moved to Atlanta Texas as relatives search for missing residents. Governor Leeke sent 14 state police to assist with the search and security. Roads into Rodessa were closed and guards surrounded an open gas well to prevent disaster.
Funeral services for Mrs Robert Lemon will be held at ten o clock Saturday morning at the L A Jones funeral home with Dr Arthur Atack of the Methodist church officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery. She was born September 14 1860 in Ohio and lived most of her life here. She was first married to D L Burrowehs in 1881. he died in 1896. Her second marriage was to Robert D Lemon in 1903. he died in 1918.

Two Ottumwa men known as the honeymoon bandits were sentenced to 30 years in Fort Madison penitentiary after pleading guilty to assault with intent to commit murder and confessing to a 15 day crime spree that included looting a clothing store in Osceola and early gunfight with night watchman Ralph Adam. They married two women in Lancaster, Missouri, during the spree and admitted to forging checks while riding with their wives in the back seat.
Sheriff Putnam learned Graham and Thompson believed they were in Keokuk county when they entered Washington to steal a car last Tuesday. They spent hours in town and later stole another vehicle near the square after asking Sigourney’s Earl Tremmell about their resting place. They had earlier broken into a Timmins car on West Madison, taking blankets and a Hinckmaw coat to a workshop at Everett Simpson’s, where they rested briefly. The Timmins theft wasn’t reported until this week.
Rev. FL C Klein, father of Rev. Carl W Klein of Washington Iowa, died at his home in Eitzen Minnesota after illness. He was born in 1867 in Friedland Silesia and preached across Iowa Minnesota and Illinois before settling at Eitzen for nearly thirty years. He leaves a wife and two minister sons Rev Walter Klein of Cleveland and Rev Carl Klein of Washington plus Gerhard of Caledonia Minnesota. Funeral plans were incomplete with services expected next Monday in Eitzen.
