Joe Welch, 28, a farmer near Superior, was treated at Cole man hospital after four toes on his right foot were amputated. He fell into a slowly built whipsaw while helping his father cut wood on the farm.
Floyd Woolums, a 51 year old laborer from Tingley, ran eleven miles to win a bet in under two hours. He finished in one hour 49 minutes and then rode back to Tingley in the same day. The feat took place between Tingley and Mount Ayr.
Shell Rock creamery produced 400,288 pounds of butter in 1938, the largest in its 43 year history. It paid patrons an average 32.43 cents for 336,619 pounds of butterfat, totaling 108,234.73 dollars. Butter shipped totaled 335,636 pounds at an average price of 27.22 cents.
Des Moines reports Lieut. Col. Claude F. Cox veterinary officer at Fort Des Moines is transferred to the Hawaiian islands per Washington orders. He is son of William Cox of Cedar Falls. Major Frank Nelson, Iowa National Guard instructor at Burlington, is also moved to the Hawaiian islands according to the same orders.
Arthur Basham of Indianola developed a doughnut handle idea in his wife’s kitchen. He patented the Dunka-Donut, built a unique machine to fry them, and has sold over 50 000 doughnuts to customers across the nation.
At the annual meeting of the English Valleys creamery board and patrons Frank Wallace was reelected president Roy Wallace as vice president and Orville Faas as secretary New directors elected were E M Wilson Keswick and Harry Wade Parnell Holdover directors are R G Owen Orville Faas Howard White George Mohr Romer Miller and Henry Norling The creamery produced 1 678 638 pounds of butter in 1938 at 30 28 cents per pound butterfat and 351 782 more pounds were produced in 1938 than in 1937
Senator A. Claie Dewey urged a prepaid sales tax system at an Iowa League of Municipalities meeting, claiming it would recapture about two million dollars in state revenue. He cited economists who say prepaid collection best ensures full retail tax parity.
Marilyn Rhode, six, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Rhode of Tabor, was fatally struck by a car while crossing a street to join her father near a lumber yard. Officers said the vehicle was driven by William Trevor of Kansas City and the child was dragged about 30 feet before the car stopped.
London February 15. Chancellor of the Exchequer Sir John Simon said in the House of Commons the government seeks borrowing authorization for 400,600 pounds 31,876,000,000 to fund rearmament. Total authorization would reach 800,000,000 pounds over five years ending 2941 to 2942.
John Alexander Morrison of Chicago will deliver the fourth and final lecture on Developments in Soviet Russia at 8 15 in the high school auditorium. The talk will be illustrated with slides and precede an assembly at the afternoon program. Morrison, University of Chicago geographer, has led tours and written on the USSR and Near East.
The eighth annual Hello America program will mobilize over 3700 VFW posts and 2600 Ladies Auxiliary units for a nationwide rally. Commander Shockey urges local listeners to tune in tonight on the NYC Blue Network at 11:36 pm EST, 10:20 pm CST, and 9:30 pm Mountain Time. local stations include WMT and KENT WENR.
County officers draw fifty petit jurors for the March term with Judge Frank Rechly presiding. The term opens March 12 and jurors report March 20 for jury trials. Names include Rosetta Ashby Cedar Two Oscar Baker Fourth Ward Clara Barker Third Ward and many others from Wellman Wellman and surrounding towns.
Arrangements are set for a Washington county University of Iowa alumni banquet on February 23 at the First Presbyterian church Washington. The Quadrangle Singers ten Town students will perform under Hugh Cockshoot with Dr Donald Mallett as speaker. Tickets for chicken dinner and program are 70 cents. available from banquet committee members or local alumni in town.
Mr. and Mrs. John Stewart report arrival in Corpus Christi and brief stay in an apartment before visiting Brownsville and Galveston then returning home. Weather in Texas described as perfect.
Mary Jane Pearson Hartwick died in Los Angeles after a stroke. Born September 15, 1876 on a farm near Ainsworth, she married J Seward Hartwick in 1902 and lived in Davenport before moving to California in 1925. She leaves two children Lula Mildred and Arthur Ray, two grandchildren, one brother Harry Pearson, and a sister W. B. Frame. Funeral services are set at the Utter and McKinley funeral home in Los Angeles.
Police blockaded streets to trap a five to six man gang that held about ten employees in a wash room and looted 100 safety deposit boxes at the Blackstone hotel. The raid yielded substantial but unestimated jewelry and valuables. a separate Cavailer hotel robbery followed an hour later with no indicated connection.
Dean Stewart was sentenced by Justice of the Peace J K Bovee to thirty days in the Washington county jail for passing a bad check. He had just completed a similar sentence when brought before Justice Bovee again. The sheriff’s office reports another bad check charge against him.
A fire in Hallock Minnesota last night damaged five buildings with an estimated loss of 35000 dollars. One person is missing, three are in the hospital and several others were injured. The missing person is Miss Eloise Jensen, about 24, who resided at the Kittson hotel.
A cold wave swept into Iowa with temperatures plunging to 16 below in Spirit Lake and Mason City. Pocahontas Humboldt and Charles City ranged from 12 to eight below as forecasts predicted zero to ten degrees in various regions tonight.
Funeral services for Mrs. A. J. Rankin will be held Thursday at 2:30 PM at L. A. Jones funeral home, conducted by Pastor Dr. Arthur Atack. Burial follows in Elm Grove cemetery. Mrs. Rankin died shortly before noon yesterday after a long illness, aged 81.
A fire in Estherville Iowa started in an overheated store and damaged the Art Bunty garage and Berg furniture building plus two smaller shops. Bunty's wife was trapped on the second floor and rescued by four men. Estimated losses run about 25 thousand dollars.

Des Moines reports the house passed a bill diverting use tax revenue to fund homestead tax credits. The homestead credit fund is short this year, and only funds for full exemption credits will be diverted.
London reports say the British cabinet agreed in principle to recognize the nationalist government in Spain but will delay formal recognition for further talks with France. Lord Halifax submitted a report weighing pros and cons and suggested acting without delay if France agrees. Chamberlain noted Hitler told him he would withdraw troops from Spain when others do the same.

The House Naval Affairs Committee approved a $5,000,000 authorization to develop Guam harbor and airfield. The panel also backed a $376,000,000 emergency armament bill for 5,500 Army Air Corps fighters and rejected removing Guam funding from the larger base development bill.
