Centerville city council appoints John R Needham newspaper man to the civil service commission for a four year term. He replaces Jake Ritter who cannot serve due to membership on the state mining board.
Mason City reports A. C. Hagenson twenty four year old Thompson farm employee arrested in southeast city on a charge of driving while intoxicated began serving a ninety day jail sentence within forty eight hours of his arrest.
In Monroe County the St Marys parish hosts a WPA supervised recreation effort for approximately 60 local children. Initiated February 4 as Sevilla branch of the project, the program offers music and arts and crafts instruction led by recreation instructors and a 50 instrument band is organized.
Cedar Rapids report notes Wiley Rutledge, dean of Iowa State University College of Law, dismissed Roosevelt court revision as a dead issue. He spoke to the Rotary Club on modern corporation legislation and court appointments, calling rumors embarrassing and stating he only knows what is in the papers.
DES MOINES Governor Wilson sharply urged the Iowa State highway commission to cut payrolls and expenses. He said the meeting was part of routine economies with state boards, and dismissed a $100,000 annual maintenance cut as insufficient, demanding greater savings.
Grinnell will host Harry Hopkins for a homecoming visit with no fanfare as requested. Hopkins arrives Sunday and stays until Friday. He will broadcast an address from Des Moines during the trip. Chester Davis and Mrs. R Kerr will also be in Grinnell for the visit.
DES MOINES The senate passed the social welfare board bill 35 to 10. It creates a three member full time board with each member receiving a 4000 dollar pay to replace the present five part time members. The measure goes back to the house for concurrence with minor amendments.
In Keokuk an early church service at St Johns Episcopal Cathedral concluded before the custodian alerted the rector that the building was on fire. Firefighters found a small blaze near a flue under the main auditorium causing minor damage.
Democratic congressmen voiced anger at a secret caucus on party strategy. House leaders criticized bill handling by committee chairmen. Representative Cox of Georgia led criticism, claiming there was not enough consultation between the White House and House Democrats.
A county education meeting on the new federal farm program will be held February 16 and 17 at the Y M C A for township committees. County chairman Wayne Norman said afterward township committees will contact each producer about participation plans. Landlords in town may visit the agricultural conservation office for farm information. Washington county AAA acreage allotments are to be available February 18. The state committee approved the individual allotments. The county office prepares a Farm Plans for Participation form for each producer, detailing farm maps crop classifications allotments and potential payments under full program compliance. Mrs A J Dawson and daughters Anna and Etha visited Davenport yesterday.
Mrs Amos J Rankin aged 81 died at 11 15 in her home on Marion avenue following years of declining health and a June fall. She was active in the Methodist church and Sunday school in Washington and previously belonged to Plainfield church. Born Mary Han Berdo January 13 1858 she married Amos J Rankin December 24 1878 and lived on a farm north of town before moving to Washington in 1895. The Rankins observed their 60th wedding anniversary last winter. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Densmore Guthrie of Moline Mrs Ralph Thompson and Mrs Don Bell of Washington and brother Peter Berdo of Washington. two children a brother and two sisters preceded her.
Francis Hiller who escaped from the state boys school at Eldora on the first day of February was found yesterday evening by Sheriff H M Putnam. He will be returned to Eldora today.
Des Moines reports praise from Sid Williams of the National Safety Council for the Iowa State Safety Council. He credits the council and the highway patrol with reducing 1938 highway fatalities and shaping a nonpartisan, well funded safety effort based on enforcement and public education.
The body of Pope Pius XI was sealed in triple coffins and placed in a crypt beneath St. Peter's Basilica. Hundreds of dignitaries knelt as Cardinal Pacelli led the papal rites, praising his mission and the Lateran Treaty with Italy.
Iowa Supreme Court affirms a $2,500 verdict for Roland Rab enold of Ainsworth against Jay Hutt from Washington in a November 1, 1916 auto crash. The ruling also sustains a Washington county order requiring Rubio Savings Bank to pay $535.90 and issue a trust certificate to the estate of L H Dyerman over a pre 1933 checking account.
Twenty two members of Boy Scout troop 35 hiked to their cabin west of town last evening cooked their supper and had their regular meeting. Three of the boys passed their fire building test Bill Hrellen Bob Breitenbach and Gene Watson and Bob Marble passed his cooking test.
Des Moines February 14 The house concurred in senate amendments to the social welfare board reorganization bill and sent the measure to Governor Wilson for his signature. The new board will be composed of three full time members and will administer old age assistance aid to dependent children child welfare and emergency relief.
A meeting at the courthouse today, led by President Ed Houle, organized a sustained drive for Bureau members for 1939. The special committee includes Joe Knotek, Marion Stransky, Karl Smith, Arthur Duensing, C. L. Stannard and Karle Libe. About 160 members have already volunteered, and the campaign is expected to run about two weeks.
Economist notes hog prices likely to hold this year with only modest declines and higher marketing volumes. He cites cycles from 1934 to 1936, drought impacts, and limited export demand for lard as key factors. Trade with Great Britain offers some relief, but Germany remains lost as a market.
Fred L. Luce, inspector of state institutions, told the Rotary Club that Iowa’s fifteen institutions house 20 100 people after 2 242 overcrowding beyond capacity. He urged enlargements over new buildings and praised the Washington county home. Senator William H. King of Utah urged Secretary Hull to pursue a United States disarmament conference. He argued most nations would accept an invitation except Germany Italy and Japan, which could be drawn in later. Hull countered that current conditions make this an opportune time to delay.
Washington February 1 Justice Brandeis retires after 23 years on the Supreme Court at age 82. President Roosevelt expected to appoint a western man to fill the vacancy as the fourth court nomination of his reorganization plan. Des Rutledge of Iowa University Law School, 45, a Democrat and Roosevelt ally, is among those mentioned.
Daniel Rohrer 86 longtime Washington County resident died at 12 46 this morning at his North Mason Avenue home after a period of declining health. Funeral services set for 10 30 Wednesday at L A Jones Funeral Home with Rev William M Nichol Jr of United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Rohrer born Medina County Ohio March 1 1853 came to the area in 1878 and lived on a farm before moving to town. He married Violetta Hunter July 6 1882, who survives with three children Daniel L Rohrer of Washington, Mrs Mary Turnipseed of Richland, Mrs Sadie Pearson of West Chester. Two sons and two daughters preceded him. There are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters reside in Seville Ohio. They are Sarah, Barbara, Mahlon, Simon and De Kohrer.
Des Moines February 14 The Iowa House passed a bill requiring all marrying persons to be examined for syphilis before marriage with 86 to 14. Two amendments were adopted limiting physician fees to $2 and requiring out of state marriages returning within six months to undergo the test. Mrs Marion Wells of WeCheaster called today.
King introduces a resolution to authorize a president to summon the power to Washington for a disarmament discussion. The proposal aims to facilitate executive authority over foreign policy actions in the pursuit of arms reduction.
