Newton and Oskaloosa mail carrier Roy White, 50, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in district court and paid a $300 fine. The case concerned the Newton to Oskaloosa route.
DES MOINES Iowa reports create a curious tie between Atty. Gen. Fred Everett and his assistant Horace Pike. The fish and game department is linked to Pike and his secretary Miss Nellie Fish, prompting scrutiny of departmental assignments and possible conflicts.
Ottumwa officials ban all visitors at Sunnyslope sanatorium amid a flu outbreak in the city. Superintendent Rose McClelland said the disease has not appeared at the facility but visitors will be barred to prevent spread.
A 91-year-old Newton widow Mrs W G Clements was rescued by her son and neighbors when her attic fire spread through a 50 year old house. The blaze destroyed furnishings and many valuable antiques.
Mary Ann, 17, Waterloo high school senior, won the state DAR good citizenship pilgrimage to Washington. Miss Sanders was chosen from Iowa county winners by a committee led by Mrs. Clyde Brenton. Selection based on ability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
DES MOINES A house agricultural committee voted 21 to 17 to kill a bill aimed at stopping county farm bureaus from forming cooperative enterprises. With 52 of 198 members on the panel sponsors concede the measure is dead.
In Des Moines the Iowa Supreme Court upheld a $15 000 award to Mrs Amelia Andrews for injuries after her husband died at the Des Moines YMCA. She had sought $75 000 with a Polk County jury awarding $21 886 before judicial reduction.
A bill requiring physicians to perform a syphilis blood test during early pregnancy exams was approved in the senate. The sample would go to the Iowa City state bacteriological lab. An amendment would require the father or other responsible person to take a similar test if the result is positive.
The Iowa unemployment compensation commission paid out 2,583,649 to 40,000 workers in the last six months of 1938. It collected 3,936,979 and held a balance of 10,333,721 as of January 1, 1939. Total expenses reached 334,512 with 223,160 spent on salaries.
C. M. Welch, director of athletics at Buena Vista College, announced his resignation effective Friday. Welch, who arrived from Storm Lake High School last fall, will become a distributor for an old pump company.

Associate Justice Louis D. Brandeis of the United States Supreme Court resigns. Brandeis, aged 82, was appointed by President Wilson in 1916 and leaves the bench after decades of service.
Reports say the public school milk fund is depleted and needs new contributions to continue milk distribution through February. Supt. BE A Ralston notes funds will run out by March first without additional gifts as influenza risk rises in February and March. The program has long provided milk at schools for families unable to pay, improving children's health.
Treasury Secretary Morgenthau testifies before the Senate committee that government aid to the French air ministry for purchasing American military planes was given at the president's request. General Malin Craig opposed the move but was overruled by higher authority. Senator Austin notes Morgenthau agreed to release prior testimony after War Secretary Woodring's second appearance.
Rep. Gustav Alesch of Marcus urged a five member house committee to investigate alleged irregularities at the state fair board. The probe would follow the legislative session and report to the next general assembly.

Dr A R King professor of philosophy and religion at Cornell college spoke to the Men's Club of the Methodist church on why men drink. He argued alcohol is a problem for psychology not physiology and that it fails to satisfy motives for excitement relaxation or sociability.
Mr and Mrs Wilbur Long of Ottumwa are parents of a nine pound girl named Sharon Marie. Her brother David and sister Diane are thrilled. Sharon Marie and her uncle Lee Holland share the same birthday. Mr Long is a son of Mr and Mrs C W Long Jr of Washington. Durward Barnes J C Penney manager returned Tuesday from Milwaukee on business.
The State theater hosted a capable performance of Prologue to Glory about young Abraham Lincoln. Lyle Hagen portrayed Abe with vigor while Viv id actress Fannie Ellen played Ann Rutledge with charm. The cast included Henry Onstott as a debater and Charles Healy as his interlocutor, and the show drew 754 afternoon patrons and a ticket income near $400.

Des Moines February 16 George A Wilson signed the social welfare board reorganization bill creating a three member full time board with six year terms at four thousand dollars annually. The measure becomes law upon publication. Wilson plans early next week appointments. Also notes visits from George Bickford of Davenport and the Lovelett and Wieland families visiting local residents.
Spanish internationalist artillery pounded Madrid with large shells causing extensive damage. At least five people killed and twelve wounded as loyalist leaders weigh prospects of preserving contra Spain. Italian volunteers reportedly to stay in Spain as Franco declares their task finished.
Melville B. Logan former clerk of the district court in Washington died at his Los Angeles home yesterday afternoon at about 66 years of age. Funeral services will be held in Los Angeles Saturday. He was born near Washington and taught school for many years. Surviving are his wife and one son Ray of Los Angeles, a brother Will Logan of Washington, a sister Mrs Myrtle Sha of St Joseph Mo and two aunts Mrs Mae McFarland and Mrs Mary Deuel in Washington.

Fred Downing chairs the committee and urges all solicitors to submit strong reports as a new troop under Dale Klesey grows, signaling expansion of Scouting locally. Washington February 1 The Wage Hour Administration announced it won a permanent injunction against Powers Manufacturing of Waterloo Iowa. The decree signed by Judge George Beott bars paying employees under 25 cents an hour and prohibits shipping products in interstate commerce until the legal minimum wage is paid.
Three farmers were hanged before dawn in Winnipeg for a $20 robbery that fatally injured their victims. Mrs. Anna Tlek of Dauphin, Manitoba, aged 81, was among the killed.
Wilton Hamey of West Ch ier underwent a major operation at St Luke's hospital enport on Monday morning. The patient is reported in good spirits post procedure and recovery is underway.
