Richard Parrish, ex Iow a City car dealer, pleaded not guilty to three forgery counts when arraigned before District Judge James JP Gaffney. Unable to post $2,000 bond on each charge, he was remanded to the county jail.
Des Moines Miss Lois Johnson of East High was chosen by the Iowa DAR committee for the trip to Washington D. C. in April based on service patriotism and leadership.
Ed Rhodes 814 longtime local carpenter known for portraying Santa at community Christmas tree celebrations died. The civic figure earned affection from hundreds of children during annual events here.
Harold Devault of near Bloomfield lies critically ill at St. Joseph's hospital in Ottumwa unaware his wife died over ten days earlier. Mrs. Devault, 20, died Feb. 2 at St. Joseph hospital after a brief illness. her husband has been hospitalized since her illness.
In a special election Coon Rapids residents authorized placing the municipal water works and electric light and power plant under a board of trustees. The vote was 327 yes to 190 no. The mayor will appoint the board, which begins March 1, replacing the town council as managers of the utilities.
Oskaloosa resident Robert Woods obtained his second divorce from Le Cleo Woods in eight months. The couple, first married in July 1933, divorced in May 1937, remarried in December 1957, and separated again this past Monday, with custody of their one child awarded to the father.
Fort Madison Iowa man George W. Dunlap a 47 year old former guard at the Io Wa state penitentiary received a five year term in the Anamosa reformatory after pleading guilty to carrying narcotics into the prison He was arrested January 14 the day he was charged with delivering narcotics to inmate Frank Curtis Dunlap testified he received 25 dollars for the delivery by District Judge Joseph K R Leary.
Cedar Falls students at a State Teachers college pressed for access to toothpicks in the college cafeteria. Since the 1933 opening of the new commons, toothpicks were once deemed improper for social reasons. An informal student group presented a box of toothpicks to the cashier and asked they be kept for diners.
Deputy sheriffs Richard Payn and Roy Radebaugh traced Charles Sellers a mile across a muddy field near Paralta and arrested him in connection with thefts from Paul Sweitzer and Marvin Johnson.
The Algona charity Ball sponsored by the Ameri can Segon Kiwanis Rotary clubs Junior Chamber of Commerce and Chamber of Commerce Reeve will be held Monday evening at the Bryant school auditorium. Mt Pleasant official S Finley announced start of rebuilding on the Jeffrey building at the northwest square corner damaged by fire last month. Debris clearance begins, then upper walls are torn down and rebuilt with light colored brick to resemble a new structure. Lower walls and foundation stay, store on ground floor with offices above, lease terms not yet arranged. Weather and clearing work will determine start of construction in early spring.
A. Crabb of Sioux City is named assistant general superintendent at Swift Packing Company's Brisbane plant Australia. He departs with wife Dorothy Ward daughter Susanne and mother in law Vida Ward after a Chicago layover for a long voyage via Honolulu Samoa Fiji New Zealand ending in Sidney March 21.

American Baptist mission property was struck injuring four. civilians and refugees at Hankow rail hub were among victims amid air assault on streets and a crowded hotel.
Iowa faces a push by 50 federal tax agents after March 15 to boost collections of the 2 percent federal old age payroll tax for 1937. Total 1937 receipts show the unemployment compensation tax raised 4.708 million from 307,416 workers, while the old age tax brought in 4.688 million, suggesting many employers evade or are unaware of the levy.
Everette L. Stewart of Washing ton county filed for Republican nomination for the Iowa legislature at Des Moines. He plans to run in the June primary to seek a third term after serving in the last two sessions, saying friends urged early entry and Republicans are pleased with his work.
Mrs Larue Trumbauer, former Keota resident and sister of John Bryson, died in Denver Colorado on Sunday. Funeral services are held there this afternoon. She leaves two daughters and a son in Denver and a sister, Mrs Nettie Douglas of San Diego California.
Iowa Supreme Court affirms Washington County district court order granting executor T. L. Brookhart authority to recover assets of the O. M. Sweet estate. The ruling, contested by W. E. Swinolau Commercial Investment Co and its president, upholds asset recovery actions in the estate case.
Des Moines February 15 Iowa safety councils coordinate to identify unprotected railroad crossings in the state. State executive secretary Phil H Sproul says data is being collected as 175 to 200 crossings are slated for protection in the new project. Federal funds provide about 1.008 million of a 1.4 million grade crossing program with signals available from July 1.
Clarence R. K. Miles of the United States Chamber of Commerce urged Washington business interests to defend themselves against what he called unjust attacks. He credited business with prosperity and a high standard of living, arguing the system should be preserved and better explained to the public. He warned against discarding free enterprise and emphasized that what helps business helps all.
In Tia Juana Mexican soldiers fired on a rioting crowd after a girl Olga Camacho eight found slain. The mob attacked the jail and a federal building, a firefight ensued wounding several as soldiers dispersed the attackers.

The Washington board urged a larger Chamber of Commerce budget for the year. Secretary O E B Sehmitt cited Chamber accomplishments in preventing outside solicitors from money schemes. He estimated savings of $5,962 from stopped schemes and $2,385 wasted by solicitors who should have been stopped before starting.
More than 100 young people attended a Sunday evening Happy Hour at the YMCA after church services. United Presbyterian youth led the program titled The Happy Hour Program from station XYZ Washington Iowa. It included a scripture lesson, Lincoln and Washington life sketches, a bas solo, poems, a junior high clarinet quartet, and a vocal duet. Next week's program will be run by Presbyterian young people.
Mrs. Maria Marshall, who says her mother was a cousin of Nancy Hanks, observed her 88th birthday. Asked about today, she said the world is selfish and people do not work enough, and there is no home life anymore.

In Carroll two gunmen tied to the Southeast Iowa spree robbed an oil station at about 6:30. Julius Tacke identified the robbers as James Thompson and George Graham of Ottumwa, ex convicts suspected in multiple car thefts and a February 7 Osceola clothing store burglary. Investigators link the duo to crimes in Davenport, Osceola, Ottumwa, Faizield, Washington, and Council Bluffs.
Grinnell Iowa Charles Bear of Washington sophomore at Grinnell College will head four students to Central College Pel la Tuesday to present a program at the morning chapel service This is the first in a series of exchanges sponsored by the Young Men's Christian Association The group will later visit Cornell Coe and Iowa State colleges in spring.
Iowa Supreme Court rules Frank Lamphier of Mahaska County must transport his five children to the school bus on the main highway a quarter mile from his home. The case, a mandamus dispute, sought to compel the district to run the bus up a steep hill to his residence.
Washington Feb 15 An FCC chairman announced a broad thorough investigation of the radio industry to determine whether a monopoly exists. Frank BR Mc Ninch said the inquiry would assess competition and market structure across the sector.
