Prison inmate walks off Iowa farm near Montrose
Robert E. Ellis, 32, escaped from an Iowa State Penitentiary farm near Montrose Sunday night. He is serving 10 years for breaking and entering from Jefferson County. Warden Jim Hardin said Ellis wore prison clothes and is 6 feet tall, 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Fires devastate Malcom coop elevator and Des Moines buildings
United Press International reports heavy damage from predawn fires in Poweshiek County Malcom destroying the Farmers Co op Elevator and threatening anhydrous ammonia storage causing evacuations. About 60 firefighters from several towns battled the blaze with no injuries. Des Moines also lost a two story brick building and a one story adjacent structure in a separate pre dawn fire with investigators called to assess the cause.

Piggies Visit Brighton Elementary Classes
Mrs. Donnie Dickinson of rural Brighton, on the Washington County Parkette Board, brought two piglets aged two and nine days to the districts first through third grade rooms Friday afternoon. Students crowded to pet the babies as cookies shaped like pigs and pork coloring books were handed out. Parkette members have been taking baby pigs to lower elementary classes in Washington County in recent weeks.

Home destroyed by fire northeast of Washington
A rural home of Willard Williams eight miles northeast of Washington burned Sunday evening, destroying the upstairs while the Williams family was away. Firefighters arrived at 8:15 p.m. The Horak farm scene line and the Williams home were noted by observers on the way to visit. Washington Jazz Festival Tickets On Sale At High School
