Sheriff Don Robertson says if caught the vandals will be prosecuted to the maximum as investigators pursue leads from the night’s incidents. A reported car train collision near the Perfex plant proved unfounded. officers are still checking the scene and searching for a driver.
Moscow reports the first post five month lunar mission Luna 20 will attempt a soft landing with Western experts speculating new Lunokhod or soil devices aboard. In Manila an explosion at a WWII Japanese ammunition dump kills at least 17 and injures 56 in Pandacan district. London endures power blackouts with street lights off as crippling curbs trigger wartime like conditions.
Keswick grower listed in the top 20 NK sorghum producers in the United States for 1971. He produced over three carloads of grain from 68 acres of NK 222, earning an invitation to join others at a Dallas, Texas gathering on February 24.
Southeast Iowa Homemaker Health Aide Service Inc announces two new Deara members from Washington County and a new director, Erika M. Concannon of Keokuk, effective Feb 1. Caryl Smith and Rev. Harry Lees Jr replace Rev. Art Peters and Mrs. Margaret Palmer as board terms expire. Concannon succeeds Susan Cook. service provides non nursing in home care with daytime hours Monday to Friday and sliding charges to families.
Governor Robert D. Ray, 43, announced he will seek a third term, basing his bid on four years in office and a record of industrial agricultural and human development. He faces Lt. Gov. Roger Jepsen in a tough GOP primary and signals a vigorous campaign focused on programs over personalities.
Cherokee UPI reports House speaker William Harbor says Iowa lawmakers lean toward a mid July primary instead of the Sept 5 date. He expects the reapportionment plan by April 13 and says election machinery could be ready 95 to 104 days after the court delivers its plan. Governors and party leaders oppose delay. Harbor also foresees quick clearance of hurdles for the 18 year old voting bill at Monday rules committee meeting. The Senate cannot act until parliamentary status is cleared.
President Nixon invited seven House and Senate supporters of anti busing amendments to the White House to help decide his stance on desegregation measures. Senator Henry M. Jackson proposed a freedom of choice plan asserting parental school selection rights and guaranteed equal educational opportunity for all children.
Cedar Falls councilman Lael Reckward will urge the Iowa Legislature to adopt a statewide noise pollution statute. He plans to present the proposal at a Tuesday public hearing on noise pollution held by the House Environment Committee. Reckward argues a uniform standard would replace varied city rules and reduce travel hurdles from differing local ordinances.
United Press International reports in Iowa that tonight will be colder with a chance of flurries in the east and north as cloudiness decreases west after midnight. Lows range from around 5 above to the upper teens in the far south. Tuesday brings variable clouds and cooler temperatures with highs near 20 to 30 across the state.
AFL-CIO President George Meany says he opposes Nixon on domestic and foreign policy but will back him over any antiVietnam surrender candidate. James R Hoffa calls Nixon the best qualified man now. Nixon gains surprise labor support as Muskie headlines Florida March 14 primary with whistlestop plan. Hoffa comments aired on ABC while Meany spoke to U S News & World Report.
In Augusta County Georgia a large boycott disrupted Phase I of a federal desegregation plan. Seven clustered schools plus 5 681 students were bussed while many buses ran near empty. Citizens for Neighborhood Schools and Save Our Children Committee led the action, defying Judge Lawrence. Butler High School reported 1 400 of 1 600 absent.
Mrs Permelia K Lay of Gladbrook a former Washington resident was honored recently by the Commercial Club and Lions Club of Gladbrook She has been the subject of several feature articles in newspapers and magazines including features on the new volunteer ambulance service and the 60 foot tall flag over Gladbrook Lions Club project Cedar Rapids Gazette asked her to provide pictures and news for six northern Tama County towns She has retired from counseling duties in the Gladbrook school but continues to live in the community.
Loveland Iowa known as Sweetheart Town handles a Valentine rush as postmistress Eva Wood processes about 300 letters. Mail comes from across the country with specific timing requests to have Loveland stamps affixed and mailed to reach on February 14. Eva Wood succeeds her mother-in-law as postmistress and relies on long-time cooperation from the former official who served thirty years.
Third concert in the Washington Concert Association series features Basso Will Roy of the New York City Opera. He presents Stop Look Listen a visual highlighting recital at the high school on February 20 at 3 00 p m with wife Nancy Honegger Roy accompanying. Roy covers Vaughan Williams Handel Brahms and contemporary songs including Dylan and Simon and Broadway tunes.
Members urged to renew for the new season during the Will Roy concert Sunday. Tables set up and workers present from 7 30 p m. Association president Mrs Kay Stewart says signing up in advance eases the membership campaign and saves time and effort.
