A column notes in Cedar Rapids that six caps cost six dollars as Mac Augustine, 45, complains to police after a sixth cap was stolen from his gas tank.
The Iowa unemployment compensation commission warns employers who used eight or more workers in 1938 but fall below eight in 1939 must file termination notices of coverage by Thursday. Failure to file may allow continued tax payments even though workers are no longer covered by benefits.
Iowa milk production increased in January with an average 14.4 pounds per cow as of February 1. Des Moines office of the Agricultural Marketing Service notes production at 102 percent of the year-ago level, with milk cow numbers roughly unchanged and gains across most regions except the southern section.
Nashua resident J. W. Diller, a patron of the Nashua creamery for 20 years, visited the town and toured the creamery for the first time. He also inspected the cold storage locker, where he had stored meat for the past three years, after inquiring about the facility.
J. J Donlan, a merchandising specialist, told the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association that drugstores profit from plus sales. He said extra items patrons pick up while shopping for another product cut overhead and increase earnings.
Thomas Mann lectured on "The Problem of Freedom" to about 3,000 listeners at Ames on Tuesday. The lecture drew students, faculty, and others, highlighting Mann's exile from Nazi Germany and his distinguished status as a literary figure.
Adolf A Berle Jr assistant secretary of state will address the closing session of the National Farm Institute in Des Moines on February 24. C V Gregory says Berle will discuss culture trade and neighborliness in a warlike world as one of Roosevelt era Brain Trusters remaining in government.
Audubon celebrated the dedication of its new courthouse with an all-day event. District Judge H. J. Mantz opened court in the modern courtroom, assisted by Judges Karl Peters John A. Murray Charles Roe and Whitney Gilliland along with Audubon county bar members and three Des Moines attorneys.
A LeMars young man named Pon Rickdbauch was killed in a navy accident during fleet maneuvers. Details were withheld because the incident occurred under simulated wartime conditions and his family has not yet learned the disposition of the body.
About 300 Legionnaires and Auxiliary members filled Washington city hall for a county gathering with Rev. P N McDermott Iowa City national chaplain as speaker. He recalled WWI service, joked about parish salaries, and urged Americanism and community service. The event included prayers, entertainment, and dancing, with plans for future joint meetings in Wellman and Kalona.
In Stockton Maryland on February 14 a clash erupted when 25 state troopers faced about 300 farmers. Two troopers and several mob members were injured during a half hour of hand to hand fighting after a mob freed two women from Snow Hill jail. The women were common law wives of Dave Collick, a farmer suspect in a slaying. his 14 year old daughter Virginia was also mentioned.
A five o clock alarm at Glenword drew firefighters to the station. Three members had prepared a lavish ham and eggs breakfast for the crew. In Alton last week, fireman Chick Homan hiked on foot to a call at Hespers after being left behind.
Washington county physicians and guests attended a showing of a new talking motion picture "With These Weapons" about syphilis. The film, released by the national anti syphilis committee, outlines thirty five years of medical research and treatment progress and aims to stamp out the disease through public education and proper care. Dr D C Barrett opened the event and emphasized the campaign's purpose. Pamphlets explaining the program are available through the Health Unit office.

Rev. F W Eastwood of Washington Iowa joins nearly 100 Iowa Presbyterian pastors at Coe College for Fellowship Week. The eight day religious emphasis program features lectures by Dr Arnold H Lowe Dr Joseph L Hromadka Dr Percy Nickless and Dr W O Harless. Coe faculty Paul S Ray and Karl A Stiles also speak.
A man with three young children entered a Lake City restaurant. He ordered five cent burgers for the children, saying he had little money and needed it for their meals. A collection was taken to feed him and the kids as he travels to Loveland, Colorado to stay with relatives after his wife's death.
The Department of Commerce notes 8,364 fur seal skins were taken in 1938 in the waters around VU.

Washington junior college study finds students who work while attending classes average higher grades than peers with only coursework. Overall GPA 2.16, employed students 2.25, NYA students 2.33, using A=4 through D=1 scoring and semester hours in each course.
The first district V F W meeting will be held in Iowa City on February 18 with Davenport post bringing its state championship degree team to confer initiation on recruits who served overseas twenty two years ago. Local post members plan to attend as national and department officers speak and the Iowa City post hosts royalty.
