Bert Ram, Page county’s oldest Civil War veteran, marked his ninety-sixth birthday with extra cheer as his family welcomed a Valentine’s day daughter to his son William Shelby Bertram and daughter in law.
Robert Masten aged 14 of Nashua suffered serious eye injuries when a match ignited a gas water heater after the flame went out. He was lighting it at night and the blast caused the damage. doctors believe his sight can be saved.
SCRANTON Twins born this week to Mr and Mrs George Seaman weigh a total 174 pounds. One daughter weighs 151 pounds and the son weighs 23 pounds. The mother is 30 and the couple already has five other children.
Davenport man Ray Kelly 35 received a 60 day suspended term after pleading guilty to assault with intent to do great bodily injury against his brother in law Walter Korn a former deputy sheriff. Soon after Berneice Korn was granted a divorce from Walter on cruelty charges.
Robert Wilson a 19 year old Iowa Wesleyan College student from Mount Pleasant was treated at Memorial hospital for an eye injury suffered during a fraternity initiation. A paddle splinter from a Phi Delta Theta member struck him while he stood about ten feet away.
Henry Kaiser of Rockford was injured at the Fred Schriever farm near Rockford when his hand caught in a buzz saw. He lost the first finger of the left hand and his thumb was fractured in eight places. he was taken to Cedar Valley hospital in Charles City for treatment.
Two speakers at the Iowa Pharmaceutical association convention addressed fair trade and chain store competition. Clara B. Miller of Topeka urged pharmacists to support their association, while former Minnesota Governor Theodore Christianson, now NATDR public relations chair, denounced chain stores and urged a state tax.
GREENFIELD Iowa The Parm Women's Committee met in Greenfield to discuss two main projects improving county youth recreation and enhancing local school programs. The group described its aim as guiding countywide activities and supporting education initiatives.
The national forest reservation commission approved buying 3,506 acres in southeastern Iowa at about 7 dollars per acre. Keosauqua tract covers 2,393.2 acres for 16,594, Chequest 1,413.4 acres for 8,475. Total 195,765 acres in 18 states for 441,401 dollars. Largest unit is Minnesota’s Superior tract at 78,720 acres for 121,502 dollars. Land to establish national forests.
Des Moines Governor Wilson received Walter Rhodes Iowa Citys personal plea to spare his life. Rhodes condemned in September 1937 for the shotgun dynamite slaying of his wife Mabel remains on Fort Madison death row as the state supreme court recently upheld the death sentence.
Leo Kinsinger of Wellman is reported in critical condition at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after an afternoon collision with an oil truck driven by Morris Swartzendruber near the Timber church corner six miles northeast of Wellman. Swartzendruber uninjured.
The Schoolmasters club met at the North Side cafe for dinner and a business session attended by twenty two county school men. Dr R W Tallman spoke, and Dr Barrett showed a health film. The county council, with members from eight towns and rural districts plus the county superintendent, elected Robert Smola as chairman George Fields as vice chairman and Lester B Krabill as secretary.
Hobbyist Hobby L Collier of Grinnell has collected about 250 cases of old spectacles and distributes them to those in need. He continues to search for more usable eyeglasses to aid others.
Interest and attendance rise at the Church of the Nazarene gospel meetings. This evening Mr. Palmaquist speaks on The Philosophy of Fools. Friday is Boys and Girls Night with children playing a key role. Mrs Palmquist leads choruses and Mr Palmquist draws a gospel cartoon. Services start with congregational singing at 7 30.
A co operative dinner for 150 at the United Presbyterian church preceded separate meetings of the Ladies Aid society men and choir practice. Rev W M Nichol led a devotional on St Valentine. Everstine Daniels spoke on Washington discoveries and 5 W Livingston discussed ministers and lawyers. Carol Brewer supervised children. At 8:30 all groups joined to view Washington Centennial pictures by Richard McCleery.
Funeral services for Mrs Betsey A Holmes will be held at 10 30 Friday morning at the L A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev W M Nichol of United Presbyterian Church assisted by Rev Mr Peterson of Kalona. Burial will be in Lafayette Center cemetery near Keota. She died yesterday morning at her daughter Mrs Milten Maas north of town and was mother of Blaine Holmes of Washington.
George B. Stapp aged 75 died at 7 15 this morning at his Cotter home after a long illness. He was a retired grain fuel and stock dealer and had managed the Cotter hotel. He lived in Columbus Junction and Cotter most of his life, farming early on. Burial will be in Columbus City cemetery. He was born August 4 1864, married Blanche Blair December 12 1888. Surviving are his wife three daughters grandchildren two sisters and several nieces and nephews. A son Chauncey and a brother Garry are deceased.
Milo T. Sorden announces the purchase of a Fairfield store across from the Ledger office to be known as Sorden's Music Shop. Carl Rundquist will manage the Fairfield outlet while John Yousling shifts to an accordion studio there, remaining based in Washington. The expansion broadens Sorden's band instrument retail across eleven counties including Jefferson.
Average cash income per farm in 1939 was 1102 dollars, higher than 717 dollars in 1932, reflecting a rise in farm earnings. The data highlight improved income levels amid economic recovery.

A storm battering the eastern seaboard from North Carolina to Ontario for nearly a day moved offshore today. It left large areas buried under deep snow and caused millions of dollars in property damage and numerous deaths. Forecasts called for clearing skies and colder weather, easing flood fears as the storm originated in the southwest and produced northeastern gales up to 50 miles per hour.
The War Marshal Hermann Goering urged farmers to offset the blockade with greater German production while claiming Germans are not starving and that England bears the blame. He boasted of wheat reserves and said the Reich cannot be conquered as Berlin endures coal shortages and freezing temperatures. Dispatches from Helsinki report continued heavy fighting near the Manderheim line with thousands of Russian casualties.

D. C. Pettit secretary and treasurer of the Washington Co National Farm Loan association announces a meeting Monday morning Feb 19 at 10 80. It is the annual stockholders meeting to elect two directors and hear reports. Musical numbers and a Federal Land Bank official will attend, with dinner at noon in the Methodist church dining room.
In Aurel ia Iowa Gunnar Nelson a 41 year old farmer died from a gunshot wound inflicted by neighbor Henry Grieme 51 during an argument over ten dollars. Moments after the shooting Grieme hanged himself in a vacant building on a nearby farm for a tragic conclusion to the dispute.
Estherville Iowa February 15 two girls and a boy are born to Mr and Mrs Ralph Sehacherer a farming couple. The birth marks the towns first set of triplets and reflects a notable family event for the community.
Ashland Massachusetts reports the death of Thomas Addison Knowlton born February 3 1838 during a blizzard. He died last night at the height of a severe wind storm, aged 1099 years, the town’s only Civil War veteran and oldest citizen.
