The Ames Cardinal Guild at Iowa State College selects a concrete project to back. Plans center on building cement sidewalks from Lincoln Way to the Memorial Union and to Hughes Hall, the men's dormitory, providing a tangible avenue for student effort.
Joan Kober 72 of Traer died at a Waterloo hospital after a falling tree struck him while cutting wood on his brother Theodore Kober’s farm. Death attributed to shock and loss of blood.
Warren Sherbondy, 64, set out in a hurry for a railroad station to see former President Herbert Hoover arrive. He did not reach the station as his body was found nearby. Doctors attributed the death to a heart attack.
City residents faced odor and taste in Gitumwa water despite safety. Officials learned that water is flowing over the dam at Dia Moines and a legal opinion suggests Des Moines could be liable for the pollution delay due to river flow retardation.
Roscoe E. Taylor, general manager, estimated damage at the Coralville power plant fire at about 0.0. A roof fell on a temporary structure protecting boilers, causing major damage. Until repairs are done, residents are urged to conserve electricity as University of Iowa power plant and a Cedar Rapids line carry the load.
Joseph O'Keefe, 27, was jailed on suspicion of burglary after police detained him before a burglary report. He was found walking near the Great Western railroad tracks with a motor weighing about 60 pounds under one arm and a suit on a hanger under the other.
Former President Herbert Hoover toured sites linked to Abraham Lincoln dating to 1859 during his visit as guest of Mayor B W McCall. About 409 people greeted Hoover as he inspected the library in General Grenville M Dodge’s home and was told by KE BO Spelman that Hoover was the fifth president to be a guest.
Waterloo city council heard charges by taxpayer R N Col in that waterworks trustees bought a 1935 pump for 220,000 that could have been $750. The council lacks authority over trustees and asked City Clerk Knapp Mathews to urge State Auditor C B Akers to investigate the allegations.
Des Moines Chamber of Commerce president Harry Jay is challenged by Hay to a cow milking duel after editor Fred Morain accused local business leaders of lacking farming experience. Morain declined the challenge, saying he meets practice. John Adams says the group is still seeking a viable milking contest.
Helsinki reports say Finnish forces repelled Russian units on the Karelian isthmus after persistent Red Army assaults near the Mannerheim line. The communique claims 23 Russian tanks destroyed and enemy sledges largely eliminated in the Raate sector, with fighting continuing on the isthmus.
The Agricultural Adjustment Administration announced 1940 parity payments to growers who meet federal acreage requirements. Totals include cotton 96 million dollars, wheat 57.1 million, corn 48.6 million, and rice 0.3 million.
The Iowa supreme court affirmed a lower court ruling setting aside a farm deed to James Wesley near Washington. Wesley had his father sign the deed in 1937 before the father's death amid family claims of undue influence and equal shares in the farm. The farm, valued at 9,400 in 1918, was initially purchased jointly.
Martha Foster announced that nine women will begin work tomorrow in the WPA sewing room at the courthouse. Mrs. Lucille McColgan will arrive to assist the supervisor and workers in starting and organizing the project.
Des Moines February 13 apg The 1940 Iowa state corn husking contest will be held near Mitchellville in Polk County announced Arthur T. Thompson associate editor of Wallaces Farmer and Iowa Homestead. The contest is sponsored annually.
The Washington Y M C A board discussed plans for the annual meeting in May with reports, director elections, and other business. The program will include a play by the U's Men's club titled The Boy Auction and moving pictures of Y activities. The auditing committee reported careful audit of books. The board thanked Charles W. Davis for panels used as a reading room partition and noted redecorating improvements to the Y building.
About 1600 residents attended a two and half hour free show at the new Smart and Parrish Armory. The International Harvester team aided, with Don Sweet of the Moline Dispatch as master of ceremonies and magician. The program featured Stan and Chuck the accordion trumpet duo and Miss Nielsen on xylophone, plus four short films totaling around 55 minutes. Prizes went to several local residents and farmers, with thanks to cavalrymen for traffic help.
Pope Pius asked apostolic nuncios in France Germany and Britain to survey responsible circles and public opinion about Sumner Welles visit to Europe and to urge faithful not to take political stands. British PM Chamberlain said Welles would be kept fully informed by the government.
Mrs Edna Witting and Clara F Paulkney were visitors to Iowa City yesterday arriving for a brief social call and sightseeing in the city.

Fifty petit jurors were drawn for the March term of district court. Judge J. G. Patterson of Oskaloosa will preside when the term opens March 11, with jurors starting work March 18 unless adjusted. The list includes numerous residents from Jackson, Wellman, Crawford, and other towns.
High school students from Lincoln presented a Lincoln themed program at a Monday Rotary luncheon. Dorothy Larner introduced the Emancipator and seven students including George Swift Helen Hayes Georgeanne Rudiger Marjory Faulkner Robert McLaughlin Richard Weeks and Mary Acheson shared aspects of Lincoln's life.
Rev Claude Breidenthal of Bethany Missouri has accepted a call to lead the Washington Church of Christ and will begin duties on the first Sunday in April. He has pastored four Missouri churches over 18 years and is 46 with a wife and two sons, one married son teaching music.
Gospel meetings continue each night this week at the Church of the Nazarene including Saturday. Mrs Palmaquist conducts congregational song services at 7 30. Rev Palmquist speaks on My First Days In Heaven and reads Faith Under Fire. Wednesday's sermon is What About the Lost. The Palmquists present songs chalk cartoons or original poetry with gospel preaching each evening.
The funeral of Mrs. Dora BE Goodwin was held Sunday afternoon at L. A. Jones funeral home conducted by Rev. W. J. Stevens. A duet by Mrs. Lake Anderson and Mrs. Schilling accompanied the service. Pallbearers were six grandsons. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery.
Thirteen new automobiles and trucks were licensed in Washington county since February first signaling solid car sales for the period. A total of 4 594 cars now bear 19406 license plates with the treasurer’s office noting nine of twelve days open in February. William Solomon, longtime Tammany Hall district leader and key figure after James J. Hines, was indicted in New York on seven counts of extortion bribery and unlawful fees. The grand jury indictment stems from Dewey's probe into state printing contracts awarded to Burland Printing Company.
The B Men of the Baptist church met last night in the social hall. J A Sutten led the program with a study and discussion of the Bible. Glenn C Yoder joined in leading the session.
Rear Admiral Sir Henry Harwood announced that the German freighter Wakama, 3771 tons, was sunk by its own crew after firing. The crew were picked up by a British cruiser Hawkin as it challenged the ship off the Brazilian coast. The Wakama was attempting to run the allied blockade with supplies for Germany.
George H. Fields of Washington high school is in Ottumwa as a member of a North Central association committee reviewing new criteria for evaluating secondary schools. The committee, including university professors and superintendents, is testing findings at Ottumwa with four of five Iowa schools chosen for the experiment. Fields was in Ottumwa Sunday night and will return tomorrow evening.
Charles W. Storms, 70, former Iowa state auditor, died after a two week illness. He underwent a tonal operation. shock from the operation is said to have contributed to his death. Storms, a Fort Madison native, served on the World War Board in charge of fuel distribution and eight years on the Fort Madison city council. He was active in the Democratic Party since 1920 and left a wife and three children.
Manton Hebner traveled to Des Moines for a three day Iowa druggists convention and plans to return tomorrow night.
Members discussed Bible characters and questions in an evening event led by Rev I Fredmund who also supervised the op song service. Richard conducted a brief business. Woodrow Crone oversaw games. Refreshments were served and attendees enjoyed a profitable evening. The next meeting, led by Mission task men Dave Benson, is scheduled for Monday March 11.
