Russell Fresh operator of the Edgewater Inn tavern was arrested and charged with dispensing beer on Sunday. His establishment was among those raided weeks earlier on orders from the Wapello county grand jury. Fresh was released on bond.
Mrs H W Crain of Iowa City received clipping showing her daughter Hilda Crain a nurse at Woodland California photographed with Littleton Dalton noted as the last of the notorious midwestern desperadoes.
After a sleet storm in Edgewood Mrs. Teonard Funk finds ten geese standing erect and frozen to death as the sleet froze to their feathers. The birds could not reach safety.
Clarinda will host the southwest junior college fine arts festival March 16 announced by Dean Herbert L. Glynn. The event moved from Osceola due to facilities issues and will feature one act plays instrumental and vocal groups and readings with Graceland the previous year’s champion.
In Des Moines a 37-year-old divorcee is shot and killed by a rejected suitor who then shoots himself. Gregory Saravakos, 45, a chef formerly from Moline Illinois, lured the woman's son away by a phone call before the killings. The victim is identified as Louise Jones Matthews, mother of two.
Dr. Emanuel Hertz of New York told a Marshalltown dinner crowd that the complete biography of Abraham Lincoln remains unwritten. He cited his own 3,000 unpublished documents and estimated that 90 percent of Lincoln material has never been collected. Hertz is an attorney and Civil War authority who has published other works on Lincoln.
Leta Woods 13 daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Woods died in a Red Oak hospital from head injuries after her sled collided with another child’s on a field near her home ten miles southwest of here. Parents had cautioned coasting away from the road. Leta walked home after the collision and later became unconscious.
Iowa state penitentiary inmates labor to expand the recreation yard and aid Fort Madison in building a city park. For six years they have shifted earth from a 60 foot hill inside prison grounds, with over 1.5 million cubic yards remaining to be moved.

Washington D C Feb 12 Dr Raymond Pearson special assistant to the secretary of agriculture in the extension department died today after a heart attack He was 65 He led Iowa State College from 1912 to 1926 and the University of Maryland from 1926 to 1935 The two presidencies mark his long career in higher education and public service.
Des Moines reports milder weekend relief from the cold wave but forecasts snow and more cold for tonight and Tuesday. Temperatures ranged 15 to 25 degrees above normal today as Iowa braces for new Arctic conditions.
Funeral services for Thornton Roscoe Beenblossom 86 were held at L A Jones funeral home this afternoon. He died Saturday at his daughter's home Mrs John Tucker 2146 East Jefferson Street after a brief heart illness. Burial followed at Shrock cemetery. Born October 21 1852 he lived south of town for years and was a longtime resident.
County Agent W. J. Rouda and a Washington group attend the farm and home short course at Ames on Wednesday. Richard Stephens of Ainsworth Charles Marek and others accompany the agent. Dean and Guy Feldman of Kalona present a paper on Use of the Stock Shore Lease to support Three Families on 280 Acres. Feldmans and Stephens receive ten year farm account awards. RoudaBush will speak on county sheep work Wednesday afternoon.
Lam Guthrie of Iowa City will present The Mechanics Economics and Psychology of Flying at the Y's Men's club meeting tomorrow evening. Guthrie has been an Iowa City airport instructor for three years providing flight instruction plane charter and rental services. Nonmembers may attend at 7 15 after the club dinner.
Thirty two members of the bicycle battalion gathered for a session of the bicycle court in Washington sponsored by the county safety council. Jane Tucker presided as judge with Dick Marshall as prosecuting attorney and Mary Faldride as clerk of court.
Prof. Albion R. King of Cornell College Mt. Vernon Iowa will address the Men's club of the Methodist church at the regular meeting Wednesday evening. Dinner is at 6 30 prompt and the program finishes in time for the play Prologue to Glory for which many the men hold tickets.

In Juneau Alaska on February 13 ships and planes searched Stephens Passage for a Marine Air pontoon plane forced down by a storm with five men aboard. Lon Cope, famed for rescue flights, piloted the aircraft on a 274 mile Ketchikan to Juneau route and last radioed heavy icing before going silent. Survival odds were estimated at one in ten. Spokane Washington also reported a search for Roy Schreck, a veteran Weather Bureau aviator missing since Sunday on a routine observation flight.
Former President Herbert Hoover will keynote the Lincoln Day dinner at the Waldorf Astoria New York. The event promotes victory through unity in 1940 with 1500 reservations at $25 per plate. Hoover’s speech runs 8 to 10 p m central standard time and will be broadcast nationwide.
In Fairfield Iowa two men Arch ie Neuhart and Ernest Latta were jailed with John Riggs after a complaint of cheatings by pretenses. A $5 000 bond was set for all three with a non existent bank check for 1100 dollars used to purchase 20 cattle shipped to Peoria Illinois. Neuhart was once linked to a 1932 conspiracy charge but cleared by verdict.

Henry Mast 72 died at 6 30 Sunday morning at his Crawfordsville home after a brief illness. He suffered a heart attack Friday, his first. Funeral services set for 2 PM Tuesday at Wicher church with Rev Delbert E Welty. burial in Eicher cemetery. Survived by wife Mary Bittler Mast and two sons Gladden and Paul, plus three sisters and a brother. Louis Mast preceded in death.
Word comes from Washington of the death of Merton Teeter last Wednesday at his Columbus Ohio home. He was a son of J W Teeter a former sheriff of Washington county. His wife and daughter Mary reside in Columbus. His widow was Intu Slocum of Washington before marriage. The family also lived in Cedar Heights where he served as boys work secretary for the YMCA.

Survived by seven children Harry Will Charles Joe Mrs Roy Whiteman Mrs Floyd Hamil and Mrs Edna Dowell. ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Sister Maggie Hamil and brother James Hamil. She belonged to the local church since youth.
