Washington Community District school board approved a 3 to 4 percent salary increase for certificated staff, hired Kathryn Masson as second grade teacher, accepted bus driver Wade Pence resignation, and approved the 1964-65 calendar. They received National Defense Education Act funds totaling 31,583.44 with grants for science and guidance, and approved curriculum changes including TV Spanish III for eighth grade, a nine week rotation in eight grade electives, and new courses in personal typing office practice and Industrial Shops.

Six killed on Iowa roads in three crashes
Six persons died in Iowa in three traffic crashes on Wednesday. A two car wreck near Britt claimed four lives: Fern Hilferty 63 of Britt Orville Hull 53 of Eagle Grove his wife Cleo and daughter-in-law Sandra Kay Hill 20 of Eagle Grove. Minor car crash on South Iowa causes minor damage
Dallas Dean Redinger of Mt. Pleasant struck a parked car owned by Donald Duane Blew of Ottumwa on South Iowa Wednesday at about 4 30 p m after being shoved by snow. Redinger’s vehicle sustained 175 in damage and Blew’s 125. No injuries or charges were filed per city police.

Chicago girl gives birth at age ten in hospital report
A ten year old Chicago girl, unnamed and described as a Negro fourth grader, gave birth by Caesarean section to a five pound fifteen ounce girl at St Bernard's Hospital. The baby was reported in fair condition and the mother was said to be the youngest in Chicago medical records. The story notes other youngest mothers cited elsewhere.

Laura Bartlett, nine, of Fairfield, died from severe burns after stumbling into a trash fire while playing at home. She was taken to Fairfield hospital and later transferred to University Hospital for treatment.

Music Man opens to standing room crowd at high school
The home talent production of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man drew a standing room crowd last night at the high school auditorium. About 600 fans of 575 seats filled the venue as 60 plus singers dancers and actors delivered a fast moving show with superb costumes sets and lighting. The cast featured Kay Stewart as Marian Harold Hill was played by Daryl Schultz with a strong chorus of 22 backing up solos by Alan Bergstrom and Greg Hilfman. A 20 member Washington Municipal Band finale of 76 Trombones and a boys band added brass punch to the performance which runs three more sold out nights.
