Iowa GOP proposes interim reapportionment plan
Republican state chairman Robert Ray urged Iowa Republicans to back an interim reapportionment plan to boost urban representation in both houses. The proposal would raise the House from 108 to 129 and the Senate from 50 to 58, with the 16 largest counties gaining all new House seats and five largest counties gaining Senate seats. The plan, analyzed by David Belin, is to be tested in this year’s elections while a permanent constitutional amendment awaits legislative approval. Governor Hughes called a special session for Feb 24 after a federal ruling found current apportionment discriminatory.

The third 4 H Home Economics leader training meeting occurs February 18 and 19 at the Fairgrounds in Washington starting at 10 a m. Sally Smith notes the topics include problem solving, fabric erection, finishing furniture and framing. Leaders from Busy Bees Cedar Clippers Cinderellas Clover Cloverettes and other clubs attend February 18 and Good Luck Headliners Hi Ores Iowa Maidens Jolly 4 H ers Pepperettes Richmond Rocketettes 76 Chickadees Starliners and Washington Pals attend February 19. Lunch will be brought by each club with salads and their own service. The afternoon covers furniture finishing refinishing and sanding with comfortable dress.

Melvin Jennings Tops Washington County Market Hog Show
Melvin Jennings of Winfield won first place with a 225 pound Hampshire hog at the Washington County Market Hog Show held February 11. The event drew 99 hogs, with 82 graded U.S. No. 1 on the hoof and a slate of top finishers led by Lone Pine Farm and Gary Settles of Winfield. The show and a follow-up meeting February 19 were sponsored by the Washington County Swine Producers Association, Washington County Extension Service, and Rath Packing Co.

Des Moines Stepdaughter Slayer Had Threats, Police Say
Des Moines police say Doyle D Hileman 30 sought to force his attentions on his 16 year old stepdaughter Diane McConnell and had written notes complaining she did not come home from school. A murder warrant was issued after Diane was shot while walking to Des Moines Technical High School. Her mother Mrs Doyle Hileman 32 said the family had separated and that tension had built over years. Diane's real father Max McConnell lives in Albany Oregon.

Two-Vehicle Crash on East Washington Involves Local Residents
Mrs. Geraldine Sproule of Washington and Thomas Frank Crone of rural route 2 Keota were in a minor collision Tuesday at 4 pm on East Washington. Melbourne Collides With Voyager In Night Naval Tragedy
Captain K J Robertson described a three second collision that split the Voyager in two and sank it in over 480 feet of water.
