Final Swine Management Course Returns Wednesday

Sixty five Washington County farmers attend a three day swine production course run by Extension Service. The final session on Wednesday February 14 covers confinement and farrowing facilities design insulation ventilation heating systems and manure removal. Linda Timmins Named for 4-H Chicago Tour

Linda Timmins of West Chester is among 33 Iowa 4-H girls chosen for the fourth annual 4-H furnishings study trip to Chicago. The group will travel by train February 25 to 28, funded by the Sears Roebuck Foundation, visiting firms such as the Chicago Art Institute Bordelon’s Knoll Associates and Sears laboratories. The tour aims to teach furniture selection lighting and design and showcase urban living careers with Iowa State University extension staff accompanying.

Pryor Freed By Reds As Part Of Exchange

Frederic L. Pryor, a 28 year old University of Michigan graduate, was released after 52 months in Soviet and East German custody and returned to Ann Arbor with his parents. He described prison life as routine and said he was not physically mistreated while awaiting exchange for Rudolf Abel.

Progress Report on 1962 Feed Grain Sign-Up in Washington County

The 1962 Feed Grain sign-up progresses with Washington County ASCS office busy and open Saturday for sign-ups. By Friday February 9, 160 producers had signed up. Chairman Howard Lins says advance payments reach applicants in three to four days, while many take in-kind payments by redeeming certificates for corn. He notes growing interest from farmers who participated on a minimum basis last year to divert more acres in 1962.

Brooder House Burns On Jim Keller Farm

Fire at the Jim Keller farm northwest of Brighton destroyed a brooder house. Brighton volunteers arrived around 5 am to contain the blaze but the head start was too great. It marks the third Keller property fire recently following a barn and a corn crib fire last year.

Washington Community High School seniors of 1962 held their annual banquet with the theme Young at Heart. Juniors were not invited due to larger class size and the event was held earlier than usual in the year.
