Knoxville grain elevator owner pleads innocent in CCC corn theft
Alex Barbour Jr. appeared in federal court in Des Moines and pleaded not guilty to a charge he stole about 151000 bushels of government owned corn from a Knoxville elevator. He allegedly converted about 150000 dollars of Commodity Credit Corp. corn to personal use during 1961 and was released on a 2000 dollar bond pending trial. Barbour filed for bankruptcy after the shortage was revealed.

Funeral services for John Simmering Sr. 87 of 608 East Jefferson Street will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis A. Stutrud. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Simmering died Friday Feb 9 1962 at Washington County Hospital after a two week illness. He was born Nov 21 1874 in Germany and came to the U.S. at 10 months. He married Tena Lanning Aug 29 1895 who died in 1939. Survivors include five children, 15 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He was a farmer and a Lutheran.

Robert Donald Price 34 of St. Petersburg Florida died February 6 at MacDill AFB Hospital after illness. Formerly of Washington he worked at the Firestone store and served as civilian aide to three units of the St. Petersburg Army Reserve before retiring last November. Survivors include his wife and four sons. The family moved from Waterloo to St. Petersburg in 1959.
