Willys-Overland and the CIO United Auto Workers reached an interim 16 cent an hour raise for 3,500 hourly rated, salaried and production workers totaling $60,000 monthly. The agreement, announced in Toledo and effective today, lasts until the automotive wage pattern is set.
Harold Jarvis owner of the Modern Appliance store remodels the basement of a building bought from Earl Little and plans to move the business to the new location early in March. The main floor will be refitted for Modern Appliance. Jarvis, a former United States Army Air Corps member, hopes for a March opening. the Washington shop has operated for nine years as of June 21.
A marriage license was issued today at the courthouse to Jous eph N. DeLaurentiis of Tihaem New York and Martha J. Harvey of Washington.
Moscow reports more than 100 million ballots cast in the first national election since 1937. Stalin and the Communist Party expected to receive a landslide endorsement as voters faced unopposed candidates and could protest by blank ballots. Radio Moscow announced results would follow Tuesday.
The U S Supreme Court refused to intervene in the war crimes trial of Japanese Gen Masaharu Homma who was sentenced to be struck for his part in the deaths and mistreatment of U S and Philippine prisoners. Homma was found guilty of atrocities including the Bataan and Manila incidents and was sentenced to musketry.
Iowa City voters will decide March 11 on issuing 300000 in bonds for school construction. The plan funds a swimming pool, girls gym, and stadium at Iowa City High, plus gymnasium additions at Longfellow Henry Sabin and Horace Mann schools. A petition with 152 signatures triggered the special election alongside the board vacancies.
This evening Leon Beatty post of Washington will host a county Legion and auxiliary joint meeting in city hall rooms. Members and their ladies are invited. State commander Ralph Stuart from Hampton and district commander Paul Fulton from Burlington will attend and speak. Meeting starts at eight.

CIO general counsel Lee Pressman testifies before the Senate labor committee denouncing the Case bill as a punitive expedition against organized labor. He argues it would strip Wagner Act protections, expand injunctions and civil suits, and punish picketing and minor scuffles to weaken labor unions.
He expects discharge from the army and plans to return to work at the Iowa Southern Utilities offices. After three and a half years of service, he will resume his job responsibilities upon homecoming projected for Tuesday.

Elmer W Hughes age 39 of Milwaukee Wisconsin died last night in Milwaukee from a heart attack. He had asthma for years and was in serious condition for two weeks. Born Sept 6 1906 in Washington he was a son of I L and Lola Wells Hughes. He attended Washington schools and finished at a New York private boys school. He was married and had lived in Milwaukee about 20 years working in business. Funeral services were set for tomorrow in Milwaukee.
William Gabriel 85 of Fredonia died Saturday after a short illness. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Stephens funeral home in Columbus Junction with Rev. J B Pooley to officiate. Burial will be in Indian Creek cemetery. He was born March 5 1857 near Wilton Junction and was a longtime Columbus Junction resident. He married Alice Huff Books in 1892 and Ida Huff Brooks in 1924. both wives preceded him. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. Surviving are son John C Gabriel of Columbus Junction and grandson David William Gabriel, recently discharged from military service.
Dr David I Berger of Coe College Cedar Rapids preached at the United Presbyterian church union service using stories to argue for a new civilization rooted in Christianity God and freedom must be remembered he said the destiny of church nation and world lies with Christians led by Christ. Dr George Kerr presided and Rev Alfred Trenerry gave the prayer special music included a vocal solo The Publican by Boyd White and choir anthems.
Funeral services for Homer Burton Bolar were held this afternoon at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. T. C. Polk officiating. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery. Mr. Bolar died Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri after years of ill health. He was a Masonic lodge member and Christian church custodian at Iv anhoe church. Born October 27 1882 in Bethany Missouri, he married Dora Goodwin December 22 1915 in Rock Island. They lived in Kansas City 22 years. survivors include his wife, four sisters and two brothers.
Washington reports Secretary Anderson dismissed industry push for voluntary white flour rationing as an alternative to the gray bread plan. The milling sector offered to keep 68 to 72 percent extraction, push export flour, and seek a government order, but Anderson urged study of voluntary compliance and cited wartime black markets.
Bertha A. Schantz files in district court against Henry R. Schantz seeking a decree of separate maintenance. They were married August 1, 1906 in Henry County. She owns the home and asks the court to award it for her use and to have the defendant removed. Attorney L. J. Kehoe represents the plaintiff.
A group of farmers organized a neighborhood soil conservation group at Indian Creek school in Brighton township. They applied to the Washington county soils district for technical help to develop a farm by farm soil conservation plan. Harry Anderson elected chairman. second meeting set for February 14 with demonstrations and slides on erosion control.
