Frank Miles editor of the Town Legionaire will deliver an address on Lincoln at a special Lincoln assembly in the high school on Wednesday at 2 30 PM announced by Supt EB A Ralston of the Washington schools. Miles will speak in Washington for the annual Troop F 113th Cavalry banquet that same evening with arrangements by Capt Jay Prown of the troop.

Irene Dunn earns praise for her performance in Lloyd C Douglas adaptation and Robert Taylor is lauded as a rising star. The board met yesterday and rescheduled the five week program to begin Monday night March 2 at the Presbyterian church. The Washington county high school declamatory contest in drama has been postponed to Monday February 7. The humor and oratorical divisions will be held in Kalona on Wednesday evening. West Chester schools remain closed due to weather but are expected to reopen Thursday.

A snow plow cleared the highway west of town yesterday afternoon. Fifteen cars trailed the plow near the Hoyle home, rising to twenty two as it returned toward Washington. The only blocked area was mile south of Weat Chester.
A temporary road was cut by Howard Hoyleym and helpers using a tractor through fields west of town. The goal was to allow Jee Nebergail with a wagon to reach No 2 and proceed to Washington for groceries and coal.
Work on the Washington Riverside road resumed after a vehicle breakdown and the late arrival of a funeral director from Albia for Mrs. George Schultz’s mother Mrs. William Rybolt. Crews advanced to the Boyd Foster home by six o clock and continued overnight to finish the burial route as the director urged completing the task.
Henry Berdo, living seven miles northeast, described a Washington lawyer named Alfred Baldrige walking from town to his home yesterday with a 20 pound sack of flour. Berdo said provisions were short and cars couldn't reach his area, so the gesture was warmly received.
The Havre blizzard filled in the narrowed snow path beside the Lewis Hering home, creating a drift 20 to 25 rods long and so high that cars and teams cannot pass. The immense snow pile marks Havre's largest drift after the weekend storm.
Heavy snows and bitter cold delayed travel and kept residents home driving a surge in calls. Washington county's telephone exchange logged 14 000 calls Saturday afternoon to midnight, with an estimated total near 86 000 for the day, about three times a normal day. Operators worked extra shifts to handle the volume and common calls included weather and road condition updates. Line trouble was minimal, allowing nearly continuous service to most users.
Washington county roads reopen late today with No 1 from Washing ton to Brighton completed and No 2 south of West Chester cleared. Volunteers helped maintainers clear drifts as WPA workers push to Havre and ensure doctor access to Mrs Ferguson while trains remain halted to Havre.
Local audit notes only about a dozen phones out during the cold snap. One southeast line is cut by snow. linemen can hear neighbors but cannot reach the exchange. About 85 farmers in the area lack phones, 35 would like service now.
