General Telephone consolidates Midwest offices in Toledo

General Telephone will consolidate the Midwest business office at Washington with the Toledo office to centralize records. The Washington office at 217 E Second will stay open for payments 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Billing questions should be directed to the Toledo office, with calls free from the business line. Repair service remains via Operator and Zenith 2050, also free.

Kindergarten eligibility list in Mid-Prairie schools

Mid-Prairie School officials compile a list of 5 year olds eligible for kindergarten next fall. Children who are 5 on or before September 15, 1977 may enroll. Parents of eligible children should call their attendance center.

Open Houses at Iowa State Capitol Invitation

The Iowa House announces monthly Sunday Open Houses from 2 to 4 p.m. at the state capitol. Residents may tour the building see demonstrations of voting and debating procedures and discuss the legislative process with legislators and House staff. Southern Iowa attendees are invited February 20 eastern Iowa March 27.

Trustees Seek Tax Hike for County Hospital Budget

Washington County Hospital trustees approved a 1.7 million dollar budget and seek an additional 111735 tax levy in 1976 77 to cover FICA and IPERS retirement costs. The plan would raise total taxes to about 261771 and set a 74 cent per thousand rate. Public hearing is scheduled for March 9 at 7:30 PM.

Weather Outlook Fair And Mild Through Friday

Fair and mild weather continues through Friday with low tonight in the upper 20s and a Friday high in the 50s. Winds will be southwest at 5 to 15 mph tonight, bringing light to moderate breeze and calm conditions later in the week.

Des Moines five story blaze kills four. bystanders report horror

Four people died and at least nine were injured in a Des Moines apartment fire at the Coronado Apartments. Vivian Rand, 26, perished on a third floor fire escape after rescue attempts failed as bystanders watched in shock. Sonya, 5, later died at a burn center. Nellie Hall, 55, and Larry Thomas, 28, were identified among the victims on the fourth floor. Firefighters battled the flames as residents fled, with one man leaping from a window and others transported to hospitals for smoke inhalation and burns. Authorities noted the blaze began around 2:30 p.m. and spread rapidly through the brick building. There were reports of possible careless smoking, while one occupant’s sister-in-law managed the building.

Police record high calls and arrests in 1976

The Washington Police Department reported 1,855 calls in 1976 the highest in four years and 87 non-traffic arrests the most since 1972. The department also issued more traffic tickets and handled more juvenile cases while vandalism reports declined. Traffic accidents numbered 133 with $126,871 in damages. fines totaled $8,615. Police escorted 137 funerals.

Heart of Teaching series adopted by Washington board

The Washington Community School District will implement an Agency for Instructional TV series titled Heart of Teaching to help teachers handle day to day classroom interactions. The board approved staff resignations, hired Tom Luse as custodian, and revised several policies to align with the master contract. The 1977 78 calendar was approved with classes starting August 29 and teacher orientation August 22. The board also leased the high school gym to host a Southeast Iowa Basketball Camp June 6 10 and June 13 17.
