Mrs. Mae Essley Kauffman died today at Sunnyslope Sanatorium Ottumwa after a heart attack. Funeral services set for 2 pm Sunday at Wayland Methodist Church Zehr Funeral Home in charge. Born June 26 1881 Coppock she married Christian Miller Kauffman in 1906 and lived in Wayland Washington areas. Survived by adopted daughter Mrs Doyle Gray sister Ann Richenberger two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Kentuckian Held After Attempted Strangling on Bus
A 69-year-old James L. Childers of Paintsville Kentucky was detained on assault and battery charges after police say he tried to strangle 7-year-old Daniel Dillander on a transcontinental bus halted at Cedar Rapids depot. Witness Mrs. Juanita Dillander Jeffersonville Ky said she returned to discover the boy being strangled. she and another passenger restrained him until police arrived. The mother and boy then continued to Kentucky.

A major fire destroyed most of the Hugh Chateau Supper Club near Dubuque, causing about 100000 in damage. No injuries reported as volunteer crews from Sherrill and Asbury saved part of the building and the adjacent Chateau Motel. Two Iowa Men Die In Car Truck Collision Near Vinton
Two Belle Plaine men Cecil T. Eastridge 58 and Leonard A. Daves 44 were killed in a head on crash with an empty semi trailer on U S 218 near Vinton at 2 a m three miles south of town. Kenneth Martin 41 Muscatine driver of the semi was uninjured. The car was on the wrong side of the road on a slight curve.

Fire gutted mixed-use structure on East Seventh Street
Washington firemen fought flames for 75 minutes to control a fire at a two story building housing a restaurant and bowling alley near the American Pearl Button factory. Fire Chief Maynard L. Brown called the property a total loss and said the blaze started in an electrical fuse box. Local resident Roy Rotzinger reported waking to a loud puff and breaking glass. Insurance will cover much of the loss, though personal property of Mrs. Lloyd Davidson's father was not insured. The bowling alleys were ruined by heat though walls remained standing. The business had operated under names including Demon's Center and Mary Ann's.

Semi Truck Crash Ties Up Highway 218 Near Haskins
A semi truck driver, George Roberts of Collinsville Illinois, drove into a ditch near the Davis Creek bridge on Highway 218 about six miles west of Haskins around 12:30 this morning. Traffic was detoured for hours while the truck was recovered and the scene cleared, with work finishing about 8:30 a.m. An unidentified car reportedly swerved into the opposite lane causing the crash.
