A column recalls last spring’s quarrel over telais rationing in Johnson County. R. J. Phelps and C. McCann, chair and eco chair of the Johnson County rationing program, resigned after over three years of service dated from January 6, 1942. McCann left the fire panel. no successors have been named.
Chariton Glen Ball, 57, transient, confessed to slur ged and robbing J. T. Skidmore, 68, oil station operator at Lucas, Thursday afternoon. Skidmore was struck 15 times and robbed of $81, taken to hospital conscious and expected to recover. Edwin Skidmore found his father on the floor around 3 pm. Ball was arrested two miles west of here with state trooper assistance.
A rape suspect who escaped from Oskaloosa jail on November 29 was captured early today at his mother's Farmington home. An 111 man posse led by Van Buren County Sheriff Joe Tranan aided by southeast officers effected the arrest. Harness did not resist.
Two jail-breakers identified as John Giles and Edgar Cook overpowered Missouri Valley police after a morning arrest for an attempted theater robbery. Police Chief H W Conaway and Night Marshal Charles Tuff were forced from their car when Giles produced a hidden gun and fired a shot through the roof, with the second suspect aiding the assault before escape.
Restaurant operators in Iowa City vote to observe meatless Wednesdays starting February 14. Fish and fowl will substitute on Wednesday menus to conserve meat ration points.
Mary Olmstead 1 Des Moines and formerly of Minburn Ia was killed by a truck Friday night whose driver failed to stop while she walked the shoulder of Highway 2 near Norwalk. Her roommate Lila Lin 18 escaped injury as she accompanied her to a basketball tournament. Sheriff Lewis Johnson said Lin could not provide a clear description of the truck.
Canadian and British troops punched through pill-box belts north of the Reichswald to reach the Rhine near Millingen and near Kleve as they drive along a 10 mile front toward the ailing Siegfried line. German resistance stiffened as reinforcements rushed to close the gap. Rain slowed tanks but progress continued with gains up to eight miles in 48 hours. Berlin said the southern Roer front might open a new offensive toward the Cologne plain amid flood threats from Roer dam.
Navy reports submarines have sunk six allied ships, one warship and five merchant vessels within 22 days. The Canadian minesweeper Clacquot was sunk, as announced last month. One merchant ship named the Careidian freighter. others unnamed.
Mrs. David Blankenhorn learns that her brother Dan Donahoe died February 9 at Springville Missouri hospital where he had been for two weeks. He was seventy two years old.
The Kalona relief effort led by Mrs. Hershberger ships thousands of cut garments to European and Greek war relief. Since 1933 the program has expanded to 264 sewing circles across 14 states and Canada, producing tens of thousands of garments for refugees and war sufferers.

Paul Huston led with a $17.10 load, Sam Turkingtoe followed at $17, Paul Paisley sold light yearlings at $16.55, and T H Hugon also had a $16.75 load.
The smallest monkey, the pyremy marnoset, is native to Brazil and about 7 inches long. These dwarf primates often cluster in a single tree and move like birds on the ends of limbs.
