In Des Moines and across Iowa, V E Day observances are reactivated from earlier drafts. Communities planned both joyous and solemn events as the Allied victory nears, with many stores and taverns closing and churches opening for private worship or union services.
In Wagner near Sioux City three Klopfenstein children Marvin 10 Leon a 9 and Eileen 8 drowned after falling through the ice on Lake Wagner Saturday afternoon. An unidentified passing motorist saw Marvin clinging to the ice and alerted authorities. About 200 residents reached the scene but Marvin slipped under before rescue could reach him while the girls likely fell first and Marvin perished in the attempt.
Miss Hla Hui, 53, suffocated in a Sunday morning blaze that gutted a two story apartment building in Iowa City. Five families fled as firemen fought a small gas stove fire on the first floor. The building was a total loss. Mist Truff, an employee at University dormitory, was found on her bed after flames were out. She reportedly moved to the bedroom window but did not jump. Survived by one brother Frank Hult. It was the second fire at the building in two years and renovations had just been completed.
Athens reports a compromise peace treaty ending the Greek civil war after a 10 hour overnight meeting. HAMELAS and government representatives signed at 4:30 a.m. granting general elections and a referendum on King George's return this year, while HAMELAS is excluded from government at least until after the elections.
The British press association reported a formal agreement on repatriating British prisoners of war released by the Red Army was near completion. The repatriation pact between Britain and Russia would be signed soon in Moscow.
Allied air strikes battered targets across Asia and the Philippines in a weekend campaign. B-29s hit Corregidor and southern Manila while targeting aircraft factories near Tokyo, ammunition dumps near Rangoon, and Iwo Jima. Tokyo claimed some planes reached Yokohama area but few bombs were dropped. American forces also sank coastal craft and destroyed barges carrying Japanese fleeing Corregidor.
Nancy Marr Wood 87 of Ainsworth was found dead in her home by neighbor Ida Hunt Saturday afternoon. Born October 30, 1857, she married F. M. Wood in 1880 and lived on a farm east of Ainsworth before moving to Washington then returning to Ainsworth. Funeral services set for Tuesday at 2 30 p.m. at the Ainsworth Methodist Church with Rev. O J Fix officiating. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery. L A Jones funeral home of Washington handles arrangements.

Haifley are planned Wednesday at 1 20 p m at L A Jones funeral home with Rev W J Stevens of the Christian Tabernacle officiating Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery Haifley died after a brief illness Saturday afternoon at the county hospital He was born April 12 1886 in Trace Hill west of Washington and lived in Washington county most of his life He was a carpenter and a member of the Christian Tabernacle church Surviving are his wife Leona Wara Haifley son Max W Haifley overseas a brother Harry Haifley of Washington a sister Mrs Bini Taylor of Rock Island and a half sister Helen Knedler of Fairfield

In a U S Army hospital in France First Lieutenant Bessie L Love Army Nurse Corps supervises central supply. She provides sterilized instruments bandages and dressings for surgeons using steel chromium sterilizers and autoclaves. Prior to her commission in 1943 she supervised the operating room at Wichita General Hospital Texas.
