A federal court in Dubuque heard a petition to stop Hygrade Food Products Corp Manchester Iowa from shipping cheese interstate. Judge Henry Graven presides as the government alleges the Manchester plant processes milk into non compliant cheese containing rodent animal particulates. The product is said to be sent to Wisconsin New York and other states.
A bill to tax all insurance premiums at 2 percent will be introduced in both Iowa chambers to maintain about two million dollars yearly. Senator J T Dykhouse announced after a joint Ways and Means meeting with Charles R Fischer and Harold Newco. The plan aims to equalize taxes on out-of-state and Iowa insurers, as current rates vary from 2 per cent for out-of-state to 11 percent for domestic firms. Some mutuals pay no tax.
Seventeen cars of a Milwaukee road freight train derailed four miles north of Hawarden. Several cars overturned including three with sheep. a few sheep were killed but no injuries were reported.

Dora Wilma Hesseltine 56 died at 8 20 this morning at her daughter’s home in Brighton after six months illness caused by a heart condition. She was born near Brighton and lived in Washington county all her life. Survived by 13 children including two sons in the U S Army Guy and Juin. Also Alvin William Gale Rollie and others in the area. Funeral arrangements are pending at Sherman’s funeral home.

Fire from a lit gas stove caused extensive damage at the Clyde Goodwin residence in the 1200 block of East Second Street yesterday afternoon. Frank Longwell, owner, says insurance covers the loss and the house will be repaired and rebuilt. Mrs. Goodwin sustained minor hand burns while smothering the flame. she and her two children sought help from a neighbor and County Home foster parents.
Milton Ehrenfelt of Kalona was elected commander of the Robert M. Huff camp of the Spanish American War Veterans. Hugh McCleery became vice commander, Lonnie Bestel surgeon, Frank Gray chaplain, Dr W B Crooks adjutant and quartermaster, Walter Crawford sergeant at arms. A Memorial Day meeting at the Congress hotel was announced with yesterday’s dinner and meeting noted. A letter from Frank Beatty, a camp member at the veterans hospital in Des Moines after an operation, was read.
Funeral services for Mrs. T. Raymond Benn will be held next Tuesday at two o clock at Shermans funeral home conducted by Dr. Fred Miller. Burial follows in Elm Grove cemetery. Her son travels from Tacoma for the service before she goes to live with her sister Mrs Joy Brewer. Mrs Goodwin had been ill and the fall and fire strain were a shock. Her husband in the navy had recently returned from furlough.
Berlin reported Marshal Zhukov’s forces pinching on Frankfurt as Soviet armored units clashed in the streets of burning Austria and along the Oder. Moscow hinted at a big announcement before Berlin as Red Army advances widened toward Stettin and the Baltic. Berlin refugees predicted the Red Army would reach the capital within weeks.

December 1944 salvage reached 144 000 pounds or 144 percent of the 100 000 monthly quota.
Swedish refugees arriving in Malmo described Berlin as a ruined city with thousands dead from air raids hunger and disease. They expected the Red Army to reach the capital within a fortnight and spoke of a siege likely being proclaimed soon.
