A column notes Boone Brooklyn, a Supreme Belgian stallion owned by C. G. Good of Ogden, claimed the world’s largest horse title. Weighing over £100 pounds, it travels to San Francisco for 42 weeks of display after residing at Good stables since last November.
Muff a small Chow dog stood over 71 year old Mrs Jenny Sawyer after she fractured her hip when she fell on the torch. Neighbors could not approach until help arrived and the dog was driven away. Mrs Sawyer was taken to Mercy hospital in Mason City. She is the daughter of A A Johnson a Civil War veteran noted as Iowa’s oldest active priest.
Former U S Senator L J Dickinson of Algona visited the Iowa senate and held an impromptu reception in the Republican chamber. He said he had not decided whether to contest last November's election of Senator Guy M Gillette, noting ongoing vote investigations and the difficulty of a court contest in a heavily Democratic court.
A group of Tama Indians dressed in feathers and beaded coats presented a petition to Governor Wilson and later to the senate and house, urging a job for their friend Edgar Harlan, former State Curator who was replaced in 1937 by O. E. Klingaman. Jonas Poweshiek and 71-year-old Chief Young Bear led the delegation.
In Pocahontas Enmet Mullarky 45 a war veteran and bulk gasoline station operator died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Coroner F E Heath ruled no inquest would be held after Mullarky was found slumped in the cab of his truck at his station.
A Van Buren county agricultural planning committee recommended a course in sales resistance training to address farm and economic difficulties. The group cites excessive installment purchases of luxuries by farmers and townspeople and includes representatives from six county districts.
Local officials of the Landon Oil Seas Corp of Russell Kansas report no word of a suit by Alf M Landon former Kansas governor to block use of the Landon name. Stevan B Smith Cedar Rapids secretary says the firm formed recently took its name from a farmer from whom 80 acres were leased. John T Hamilton Cedar Rapids is president Carl Myers Cedar Rapids treasurer and H E Elliott Hampton vice president.
The SEC filed a show cause action in federal court against five Des Moines investment trusts and related entities, seeking documentary evidence on their financial transactions. Judge Charles A. Dewey presides, and Sidney J. Dillon, a Des Moines attorney, is ordered to appear.
The court house offices will be closed on Monday February 13 in observance of Lincoln's birthday.
Tokyo reports show Japanese troops and sailors landed at dawn on Haiann, seizing the strategic Chinese island on the east coast and vital trade route between Hongkong and Singapore. They reportedly occupied Hoishow, the island's main city, with little Chinese resistance.
A Washington Legion group met in Kalona last night with limited turnout due to rain. District commander Ben Nichols spoke as Lyle Burr of Des Moines described Legion aid to refugees during last year’s Ohio river floods.
A federal court jury acquitted fourteen of twenty five defendants charged with trafficking the WPA in a conspiracy to aid the state democratic committee led by Senator Davis Chavez. Eleven defendants were convicted.
President Roosevelt was suffering from a feverish attack and all White House engagements were cancelled. His doctor ordered him to remain in bed and he was likely to stay there over the weekend.
Rep. Fred Gilchrist of Iowa introduces a bill to authorize spending 369000 dollars for a new Fort Dodge post office. Mrs Georgia Williams of Columbus Junction visited the facility yesterday.
Father H. J. Corcoran pastor of St. James Catholic church will address the men’s brotherhood at the Presbyterian church dinner and meeting next Monday evening. Dr. F. W. Eastwood announced the program and said Corcoran will discuss his trip to Ireland.
The Iowa Children's Home Society conducts a tag sale to aid needy children. Miss Marie Landau will supervise at city hall after 9 a.m. participants will receive instructions to sell emblems for donations. The drive is led by Dr. F. I. Herriott of Drake University, Horace Foskett of Equitable Life, and B. J. (final names cut off).
Franco completed the conquest of Catalonia and readies to push a nationalists offensive into south central Spain. Republican premier Negrin met loyalist officers on the Mediterranean coast to plan continued fighting amid European hopes for peace. Franco reportedly withdrew fifty divisions for rest before the advance.
Funeral services for George Aske were conducted yesterday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home. Rev. W. J. Stevens officiated and burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers included Sam Himmelreich, John Godwin, Hiram Baker, Charles Caldwell, Roses Pence and Charles West.
Carney Consumers Coal Company announces a new governing board of 25 directors drawn from multiple regions of the state. Dr. Mae Habenicht serves as executive director with headquarters in Des Moines.

Judge P J Siexer awards principal share of Merc Smith estate to Arch Perrin son in law after trial showed Mrs Emma Smith lived minutes longer than daughter Mrs Archie Perrin in fatal accident. Perrin inherits $20 000, other heirs to share remaining estate. Victor Mott, former husband of Perrin, dismissed suit.
Funeral services for Mrs. Seth Thomas of Fr ge were led by Dr. Charles R. Brown of Boston with Dr. Arthur Atack assisting at the Methodist church. The service reflected family roots on Maple Lane and celebrated Mrs. Thomas's life from farm girl to educator and wife of Beth Thomas.

Ten state senators introduced a bill in Des Moines to repeal the chain store tax and replace it with a gross business tax. The plan requires chain store managers to report annual stock on hand merchandise value sold and days of operation to a board of assessors, who would determine the business tax per store similar to personal property tax.
