A Clear Lake night club named Billy's Casino was destroyed by fire. Owner Billy Schober estimates the loss at $5,000 and blames an overheated stove for the blaze. The column notes the venue as a well known local spot.
The Charles Baker family in North English suffers a third death in a week. Mrs. Baker died February 1 from pneumonia and influenza as doctors linked it to the postwar influenza wave. Husband William Baker, a farmer west of town, died Monday from the same illness. Their daughter Erma, aged nine, died at 6 30 a.m. Wednesday from a similar ailment.
Cedar Falls veteran Joe Foster who funded a Christmas dinner for local underprivileged children died of leukemia. A Spanish American War and World War I veteran, Foster served in the Rainbow division and was a longtime American Legion member.
Janet Hough Bryant 23 former Drake University beauty and Jack Chase 22 Des Moines radio announcer are announced as KKO Gateway to Hollywood talent contest winners. They will compete with couples from Denver and Minneapolis to represent the Midwest in final Hollywood auditions.

Independent retailers and wholesalers in Iowa plan a Feb 21 march to the state house to back a graduated chain store tax. The bill allocates tax per store from 10 dollars for two to ten units up to 550 dollars for chains with more than 500 units, using nationwide store counts as the bracket basis.

Ernest Todd, 30, and his ex wife Darlene Todd, 30, were divorced May 19 1937 after nine years of marriage. Ten days later Todd married Mrs Kinney in Missouri. Last November Todd and Mildred Kinney married again in Charles County and were divorced January 11.
Fort Dodge Iowa Stanford Griffith 24 publisher of the Mangan Journal was badly injured when a hitch hiker he gave a ride to attacked him. Griffiths pockets were rifled and his billfold taken a small amount of cash.
Nationalist forces pursued Premier Juan Negrin toward Valencia as Franco loyalists fled into France. Negrin left Le Perthus and reached Porte Bou just as Franco troops arrived at the border. At Porte Bou 2000 nationalist troops occupied the town raising the nationalist flag and capturing key sites.
Al Faulkner located the owner of a large casting lost from a rock crushing machine on Primary Road No. 92 at the town’s east edge. A Morning Sun contractor who misplaced the casting learned Faulkner possessed the piece and confronted him. He paid damages to Faulkner and retrieved the casting.
The Boy Scouts of Washington join 1.25 million scouts and scouters nationwide to observe Boy Scout Week alongside the 29th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Activities align with the theme Scouting Carries on American Ideals and include Scout Citizenship Day and Scout Motherhood Day.

Charles Adams, an insurance man, left municipal court calling a state highway patrolman a tinhorn sport with a gold badge after stopping completely then turning left through an intersection. Officer L B Kirsher testified Adams pulled into traffic just as he was nearby.

Members of the Washington fire department gathered for their annual banquet at the Congress hotel. Twenty nine members attended and shared turkey and other fare in an informal evening of eating and conversation. The department will hold its annual election next month.
Des Moines reports that home falls caused 462 deaths in Iowa during the first 11 months of 1938, surpassing 416 motor-vehicle fatalities. The elderly faced the highest risk, with 405 fall deaths among those 66 and older, while children were less imperiled by falls than cars.
A motorist activated brakes to avoid striking Adams' ear, sounded his horn, Adams stopped, and the driver was cited for failure to give right of way.
S R Wallace prominent Highland township resident died at his home 508 West Main in the evening after several years of illness. Funeral services set for Friday at 2 30 p m at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Arthur Atneck and Rev KE Shook officiating. Wallace born Malcolm Iowa January 1861 was son of Jobin and Patience Wallace. Survived by wife Lille Jeffery. He lived near Malcolm then Highland township since 1884 later moved toward Washington. He engaged in community affairs and church work with the Methodist church lingering health kept him from active duties.
Firemen responded to a report of a blaze on West Monroe Street but found no fire. A passerby noticed smoke from a building used by the Oetjen seed store for drying hybrid corn and mistook it for a blaze due to favorable wind.
A. R. Ledger and Bob Shannon accompanied Frank Miller to Chi yesterday to attend a three day gas convention.
Governor George A. Wilson nominated Charles R. Fischer of Onawa as state insurance commissioner to succeed Maurice V. Pew whose term ends July 1, 1989. The senate committee will study his qualifications and report in executive session. Pew previously filled the unexpired term of Ray Murphy who resigned to join the New York casualty and surety executives group.
President Roosevelt, advised by Dr Melin tries, stayed in his study in Washington, D C. He was told he could report to the executive offices tomorrow.

Funeral services were held for Mrs Bun fee Blattner died Monday January 40 at her home in Whittier California in the White Emerson chapel. Burial followed in Rose Hill Memorial Park. Survived by her husband John Blattner one brother John Denia Modeeto California and one sister Mia George Abel Winnemucca Nevada.
