Encouraging nationwide gains in business were reported with the automobile industry and railroads bolstering other sectors. Steel capacity utilization rose to 80 percent from 25 percent a year earlier while auto output in early February neared 32 000 units and coal production edged up to 7 495 000 tons though electric power lagged 12.5 percent behind last year.
In Santa Monica letters note riots in Paris and taxi strikes in New York. The text mocks the unclear reasons behind the clashes and the abundance of political factions, observing how France is upset at someone other than itself.
Ruth Marie Morrison of Washington won first in the dramatic class of the Iowa nine girls' declamatory contest at Ottumwa. Iowa City, with two seconds, led schools in total points. ties occurred for second place among Washington, Fairfield, and Ottumwa. Judges were Vance Morton Harry Barnes and C Harshbarger from the University of Iowa.
About eighty young people from Keokuk presbytery attended a banquet at Washington U. P. Church. They set tentative June 12 and 13 dates for a convention at Otoe Claire Prairie this spring, with the theme Build Core with Christ. Mack Shaw of the United Presbyterian church shared a 19 day tour talk The Missionary Special and noted scholarship funds for Christian colleges. Represented towns included Stanwood LeClaire Prairie Columbus City Ainsworth Crawfordsville Morning Sun Burlington and Washington. The program featured worship discussion on sonship stewardship citizenship and fellowship with Margaret Stewart of Washington and Gilbert Pierson of Burlington as toastmaster. A brass sextet from Washington High and junior college provided music. Dave Fulton led worship services.
At the Washington Iowa cabin Roosevelt delivered a nationwide radio address to the Boy Scouts during National Scout Week. He urged a National Good Turn and noted Scouts will aid the needy with clothing bedding and supplies. Gene Breitenbach donated two Iowa deer pictures for display at the cabin.
Dean Harland Medd asks Washington junior college to recruit more boys for the student relief employment fund likely approved by the federal government. The plan aims to hire four boys and two girls, with two new students and four existing ones, to attend the junior college, awaiting official local approval.

Washington's junior college Cardinals upset Burlington 22 to 29 after a poised finish. The underdog Cards, facing added opponents Doyle and Bennett, overcame an early deficit to clinch a three point victory and show they are a first class basketball team despite inexperience.
A district Production Credit association was organized yesterday at Mt Pleasant by Farmers from seven counties including Washington with county officials and directors from Washington present. The group aims to use a district cooperative to access short term government loans through a single loan office to reduce overhead and delays. Officers from Danville Des Moines county and Mt Hamill will serve through January. incorporation papers were drawn, with seven counties listed Des Moines Jefferson Louisa Van Buren Henry Lee and Washington.
Funeral services for Mrs Dicken were held at Sherman’s Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon with Dr Bew of Waterloo presiding. Members of the Trust attended a small group. Pallbearers listed include John Cunningham T R Gillespie Charles Thomas Jake Kenisge BK Hanson and HH Hueley.
The attendees included Mr. Roudabush Mee Owlez Mr. Stephens Mt longer Pred Weekly and Mr Hopkin who resides on Jet horse County Tine, joined by a Jefferson county seoup for the meeting.
Washington high school Demons defeated Ottumwa Bulldogs 27 to 16 in a spirited Little Six contest on home court. Norton and Kupka led Washington with nine points combined, while Ottumwa struggled to find rhythm as Washington maintained the lead throughout.

Iowa grand master urges full attendance for fellowship plus a second large turnout expected. Tickets 40 cents, sold at McLemmon and Phillips Hebner drug stores.
