Funeral services are planned for Chase Thogmartin a 62 year old Rock Island bridge carpenter killed near Brighton while repairing the Skunk River bridge. The accident occurred as a fast east bound No 20 train passed the trestle. The body was taken to Prineston Missouri for burial. The coroner ruled no inquest necessary. Thogmartin leaves a widow and a son.

Two Large Homes Burn In Community Fire
Early this morning between ten and eleven, two large orange houses in the community were destroyed or heavily damaged. The Methodist parsonage at 599 West Washington Street and the William Miller estate farm home four miles northeast burned from chimney sparks and flames spread rapidly. Firefighters saved most contents including Dr. F C Witzieman’s library with little loss, while both houses’ interiors were charred and waterlogged. The losses total about three thousand dollars, largely insured.

Township Road Work Plan To Be Set With Trustees
Supervisors will meet within the next month with trustees from each township to discuss work on township roads. Delegates will decide how to divide projects by section and allocate duties fairly in line with needs. Swindle with Teacher Loans Targets Rural Schools
A man wanted in several places for a clever swindle targeted rural school teachers in Washington county this week. He rushed into country schoolhouses claiming he had been allotted three minutes by the superintendent and got teachers to sign for a non existent book sale. Some victims were warned by officials, but younger teachers were tricked into signing checks. A 1923 Dodge sedan with Minnesota plates was linked to the suspect, who had previously operated in Dubuque county and Wellam in.

Charter Granted for Savings Loan Association
Temporary officers of the Federal Savings and Loan Association in Washington have learned that the Home Owners' Loan corporation issued the charter in Washington DC. The notice came to temporary secretary V. Cruail from J. M. Rountree through Stebert Richardson of Des Moines, who is president of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. Officers plan to travel to Des Moines to confer with Richardson and proceed with plans.
