Water Crisis Strikes Mellen Wisconsin as Wells Run Dry

In Mellen Wisconsin about 1100 people faced a water shortage with no clear cause or timeline. Homes lacked pressure while wells mains and the Bad River held water. Schools closed for lack of heating fuel and the mayor urged reopening an old reservoir to restore fire protection and resume classes.

Kennedy blocks censor probe as senator blasts action

Washington County Petit Jury Draw Names Reported for March Term

Kennedy Ignores Japanese Reds Tour Stop in Kansai

UPI reports President Kennedy’s brother Robert F. Kennedy faced noisy protests in Osaka as Japanese Communists demonstrated against him during a two day Kansai district tour. Security was briefly increased as Kennedy pressed on meeting 12 university students at his hotel, including members from Zengakuren who later did not attend.

Light Snow Moving Into Iowa Tonight

Cloudy skies move into Iowa bringing slightly warmer temperatures and light snow tonight and Friday. Moist air from the southwest collides with ground level cold air to produce snow across the northeast Friday and Saturday. Early today wide temperature swings show Waterloo at 10 below zero and Council Bluffs and Sioux City at 16 above. Friday highs range from near 10 above in the northeast to 20 in the southwest with 30 in the south.

Maggert Seeks State Senate Seat in Old Fifth District

Robert Maggert 63 of Afton, longtime Capitol buildings and grounds superintendent, announced his bid for the Iowa State Senate from Ringgold Union and Decatur counties in the former fifth district. He previously represented Union County in the 1957 and 1959 legislature and plans to leave March 1. The seat was vacated by X T Prentis who became tax commissioner.

Kennedy and Macmillan Invite Khrushchev to Geneva Talks

Washington reports Kennedy and Macmillan urged Soviet Premier Khrushchev to join the March 14 Geneva disarmament talks. The plan aims to halt the nuclear arms race and revive stalled test ban negotiations. Diplomats said Gromyko acknowledged the proposal but gave no reply.

Tiros in Orbit

UPI reports the United States launched the Tiros 4 weather satellite from Cape Canaveral at 7 43 a m aboard a Thor Delta rocket. In orbit I hour 33 minutes after launch it began transmitting from about 500 miles up and aims to photograph cloud cover for weather forecasting and future space flights.

Mine Toll Rises After Saarbrucken Mine Disaster

Grim rescue teams found more bodies at the Luisenthal Mine near Volklingen raising confirmed deaths to 260 in the gas explosion. Officials said about 480 miners went underground and 249 were recovered by morning with many still trapped deep in the pit.

Shoulder Injury For Local Man in Crash

Robert Lyman Muench of 421 South Fourth Avenue was treated by a Kalona doctor for a shoulder injury after an auto crash at a Kalona street intersection. Muench and Duane Leo Yoder of Wayland could not stop due to icy streets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Damages to both cars were estimated at $500.

Jayne Mansfield Rescued After Reef Night Survival

Actress Jayne Mansfield and husband Mickey Hargitay were rescued after their small boat overturned off Rose Island Nassau Bahamas. They spent a night on a coral reef as sharks loomed and were later treated for exposure and insect bites at Rassin Hospital.

Armored Cars Patrolling Paris Amid OAS Bombings

Armored cars mounted with two machineguns and a 37mm cannon patrolled Paris for the first time to quell a wave of plastic bombings linked to the Secret Army Organization. Seven people were injured in blasts as authorities sent thousands of troops to Algiers to quell a student protest over the killings of two European youths.

Fifty five Washington County farmers attended the second day of a three day swine management short course held at the local VFW hall. A panel of county veterinarians led the talks on swine health with Dr John Budding Dr James Jewell Dr H E Weimer and Dr Lee C Swain. Iowa State extension veterinarian Dr Maynard Spear spoke on brucellosis and hog cholera eradication programs. Dr Paul McAndrew discussed SPF pigs in the county and Bob de Baca led the afternoon session on cross breeding and obtaining breeding stock to improve herds.
