A column notes Iowa House bills to treat holders of the $10 slot machine license and the $27.50 liquor stamp as violators under state law. Presumptions would apply that licensees violate slot machine and liquor control acts. Federal records show 799 Iowans paid $100 on 2524 slot machines in 1944-45 and over 2000 places held retail stamps.
Maurice B. Rawlings announced a 12 month ban on William R H Wissink’s service station in Sioux Center Iowa from dealing in gasoline starting Thursday. He alleged the station failed to account for 1705 gallons of gasoline and diverted fuel to consumers without valid coupons, and that checks were drawn against the gas ration bank account, violating rationing orders.
Des Moines report says the bill to make permanent the one cent a pound dairy tax advances after an 83 to 22 House vote. A key amendment placed the dairy commission staff under governor and comptroller supervision, listing Frank Karker of Des Moines at 2 950 dollars and a 4 stenographer at 130 dollars per month.
Abel Judge FE W Dingwell 72 of the fifth district dies in a Dexter hospital after a stroke Saturday. He served in Adair Dallas Guthrie Madison Marion and Warren counties. Surviving son Lt Mark L Dingwell in France. Services set for 2 pm Friday at the Christian church.
Washington report declares 65,000 Germans captured in Europe since D Day. Casualties total in the Pacific and Europe reach 764,832 since Pearl Harbor, up 27,490 from February 2 in the combined war tallies.
American artillery pounded southern Manila while U S troops cleared the northern area, with airborne forces closing in from the south. Tokyo claimed a Japanese counteroffensive as bombers attacked Corregidor and Caballo, and Chinese reports spoke of ongoing battles around Canton and Hankow railway segments in China.
An Iowa USDA war board meeting in Des Moines discussed the wet corn problem across the state. It noted large piles in open cribs and inadequate drying facilities, plus moisture issues and bacterial risk, proposing ventilated cribs and feeding wet corn to livestock as partial solutions.
Mrs Will Neff 77 of Wayland died after a paralytic stroke at her home. Services set at 1 20 pm and 2 pm at Cottonwood Church with burial in Cottonwood Cemetery. Rev W T Boston and Rev J St Pooley officiate. Survived by two sons and two daughters. Robert Harper 23 of Waterloo dies. funeral in Waterloo Saturday. Mrs Harper is Anna Miller of Wayland. Robert Harper served in the U S Army until Feb 1943.
The Town Children’s Home society will hold a prize emblem sale in Washtenton on Saturday Feb 70 under the mayor’s office supervision with Mrs. Georges Dowell and the Camp Fire Girls. The event is backed by Mayor Lloyd Lytle and many local figures to aid dependent children by adoption or foster care through the Washington county welfare system.
London reports a possible decision to create a US Britain Russia military board to coordinate the war against Germany. Observers say Russia may join the United States and Britain in executing Roosevelt Stalin and Churchill strategy. Officials praise quick agreement on plans for final defeat and closer military information sharing as the eastern and western fronts tighten on Germany.
London reports Lancasters dropped six tons of earthquake bombs on torpedo boat shifts at Midden in west central Holland. Bombers were escorted by Spitfires and all returned safely to base. The Tijmsden U-boat base lies about 160 miles north of the Scheldt estuary near Antwerp, a key Allied supply port.
Luella Belle Benn died at 6 50 a m at the county hospital after a heart attack. She was 73. Born January 14 1867 in Highland township she married T R Benn 45 years ago in December. Surviving are husband two daughters Doris of Carroll Town and Mrs Ralph Woods of Washington one son Ronald of Tacoma two sisters and five grandchildren. Funeral plans await word from a son.
Soviet forces push a flanking operation to sever the Frankfurt Berlin road and isolate Berlin’s western approaches on the Oder front. Zhukov’s troops reportedly expanded bridgeheads east of Berlin, with reserves thrown into heavy fighting as the drive toward Berlin intensified.
Maj. Gen. Albert C. Wedemeyer, commander of U S army forces in China, announced that successes in the Philippines and Burma have compelled Japan to abandon offensive plans and adopt a defensive strategy across China.
Allied forces pushed to Schmid the Siegfried line stronghold at Schmidt and moved east toward the Roer river flood control dam area near Schwammenauel. German resistance waned as U.S. Army units overran Schmidt while German tanks retreated, with heavy artillery fire noted on batteries east of the Roer.
Members of the Washington fire department held their annual dinner at Congress hotel in the private dining room. Chief Ital Reinter and Mayor Lloyd Lytle spoke of the fire department history while reminiscences were shared. Thirty of 33 members attended and officers were to be elected next month.
War production chief J. A. Krug told the Senate Military Affairs Committee that immediate enactment of work or else legislation is needed. He warned that each week of delay costs war production as manpower shortages deepen, noting the voluntary labor system faltered as 1944 ended and is not moving enough workers quickly or competently enough to man plants.
