A column notes two vehicles overturned on highway 34 near Agency as one tried to pass the other. Claud Banghart of Des Moines, driving a car with a two wheel trailer, and Leland McDonald of Widon in a CCC truck were injured.
Iowa lawmakers, 158 members, each got 500 dollars in warrants for half their session pay. Governor and Speaker received 1000 dollars each, total disbursement 80500 dollars with final amount to be paid at session end.
The 38 year marriage of W. H. Hamilton a Sigourney justice of the Iowa supreme court and Mrs. Hamilton ended in a divorce granted by District Judge J. Seigera. Mrs. Hamilton claimed cruel and inhuman treatment and was awarded alimony of 200 per month starting March 1 1939 plus a property settlement approved by Judge Seigers.
In Iowa City about 35 plasterers strike at the new public high school under construction. The Build ing and Trades council accuses contractor Niels Hede of violating a state labor preference law by importing nonresident workers. Union leaders warn a stalled project could delay work affecting roughly 100 workers.
Sisters of Mercy from Council Bluffs complete purchase of the former Congregational hospital in Des Moines for 25000 to convert it into a home for the aged. The facility, once a general hospital and later a maternity hospital, has a 5 bed capacity.
W. G. Osborn of Nouds, a frequent consultant on southwest Iowa oil prospects, warned against abolishing the Iowa geological survey now. He emphasized the need for study as debate continues on the Forest City basin and oil possibilities.
Funeral services for George Washington Askea are scheduled Thursday at two oclock at Shermans funeral home. Rev W J Stevens will conduct with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He died yesterday at 608 East Madison street after a three year illness and major operation last June. He was born November 14 1878 in Clarksville Georgia and lived most of his life in Georgia and Iowa where he moved in 1899 then Washington twenty seven years ago. He worked as a Milwaukee section foreman and later a Rock Island car repairer before retiring seven years ago to carpentering. Surviving are his wife Lucy Cook Askea and seven children, eleven grandchildren, four brothers, three sisters, and other family members. He belonged to the Four Square Gospel church and taught in its gun day school.
Senator Guy M. Gillette of Iowa told the Senate Agricultural Committee that the cost of production bill would impose heavy farmer regimentation. He interrupted Edward Kennedy's testimony and warned the measure backed by 17 senators would force tighter controls and shift profits, harming good farmers while aiding poor ones.
The Iowa legislature last week approved a measure by an 86 to 26 vote to abolish the survey as an economy move, signaling a shift in state data collection priorities.
Des Moines reports a winter cold wave moving across Iowa with forecasts of 20 below zero in the northwest and northeast, 15 below in the southwest, and five below in the southeast. Morning temps ranged from eight below at Spirit Lake to one above at Des Moines, while Dubuque and Keokuk posted 14 and 16 above respectively.
Mr and Mrs Donald Bennell and their two children from Kalona spent Sunday with Mrs Bennell's parents Mr and Mrs Howard Messer in a family gathering full of familiar faces and storytelling.
Y's Men held a riotous meeting with full attendance as Gordon advance agent for the federal theater project spoke in Washington. They split into two ticket teams led by John Lemmon and Charles Berdo and discussed running a hot dog stand and candy sales during the Gold Medal basketball tournament. Winners in a nearby marksmanship contest were John Lemmon Charles Berdo Stanly Zager and an unnamed dark complexioned member who shared the prize, a candy bar.
Campustown residents students and workers report tardiness as the campus clock remains silent since Monday. Officials plan to restore operation Thursday after installing an automatic winding device to resume quarter hour chimes.
At the Leon Beauly post meeting 127 members were noted with a goal of over 170 for the year to defend the state trophy. The executive committee will draft a recruitment plan for the next session. Washington Legionnaires plan to attend the county meeting at Kaiona Thursday evening. Dr. C A Boice donated a gavel carved from a fence rail linked to Civil War history. The post also discussed the upcoming Washington bicentennial activities and plans for the annual Legion industrial show in late March.
Secretary Frances Perkins testified in a closed session of the House Judiciary Committee as it weighs impeachment charges. Chairman Summers ordered spectators removed. Rep. Thomas accuses Perkins of failing to enforce deportation laws in the Harry Bridges case.
George Bartholomew reported to the sheriff that a new Allis Chalmers tractor plow was stolen from a field on his farm west of town sometime since mid December. The implement was left near the fence and a night truck theft is suspected.
In Des Moines the executive council approved two economy steps. Eight night watchmen and janitors were discharged on Gray Anderson’s recommendation, with these workers added to the 1933 payroll in error. The council also voted to use its own car fleet instead of state cars, to be reassigned to departments seeking new machines, and required department names on all cars except police vehicles.
Funeral services for Mrs Ella May Thomas, wife ofJudge Seth Thomas and sister of Dr Charles R Brown, will be held Friday at 10 am at Washington Methodist Church. The body arrives Thursday from Fort Dodge Iowa where she died after a long illness. She was born on a farm northeast of Washington and taught at Washington High School before her marriage. Dr Brown, a noted minister and former Yale divinity dean, is expected to attend. Also notes a marriage license issued to Leonard J Pacha and Margaret Pauly.
The subject expressed appreciation for the courtesy of the committee during the hearing and for the judicial atmosphere surrounding the proceedings.
Tom Collins told Mayor Lloyd Lytle he would depart town and not trouble city authorities after a hearing on intoxication. The mayor postponed the case until Saturday. if Collins is still in town he could face up to thirty days in jail. He was arrested about a week after finishing a two month county jail term for related intoxication charges.
The No. 7 one room frame schoolhouse near Havre burned early this morning with its contents. Officials cite stove or chimney as possible cause. insurance was insufficient to cover losses. Plans to rebuild hinge on a district vote, with possible use of No. 11 building and transportation arrangements under consideration.
Mr and Mrs T H Peters traveled to Des Moines today for a hardware convention and plan to return home tomorrow night.
The Iowa Children’s Home Society will hold its annual publicity campaign and tag sale in Washington on Saturday February 11 sponsored by local officials and community leaders. The society cares for about 237 children in Des Moines and statewide assists nearly 8000 youths through adoptions and foster placements.
DES MOINES Senators Guy M Gillette and Clyde L Herring recommended reappointment of Miss Mabel Gittinger of Lucas County as collector of customs at Des Moines Treasury officials expect Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau to back the reappointment to the president.
Des Moines reports that Iowa druggists may legally distribute birth control literature though subject to confiscation. The state supreme court ruled in the Chenoweth case involving Centerville druggist Robert Chenoweth who was charged with distributing obscene material and had a demurrer sustained by District Judge Charles F. Wenperstrum. the state appealed.
Premier Juan Negrin of the republican general staff crossed into France at the Spani ish border near Perpignan as insurgents advanced. He declined to discuss plans to fly to Valencia and continue the war from central Spain after the Migueras citadel blew up during the retreat.
Charles Dusenbery, son of Mr and Mrs Lee Dusenbery, has traveled to Burlington to complete his navy enlistment conditioned on passing the final physical examination.
A bill to save 90 counties from large tax refund costs passed the Iowa Senate 47 to 1. Senator A. Claire Dewey opposed, citing the Washington-Henry district. The measure would legalize all tax rates from 1984 to 1937 and allow refunds for missed deductions on money and credits in budget levies. The Senate added an amendment letting county treasurers collect taxes already refunded. the House must concur.
Prof J B Wingert of Iowa State college extension service at Ames will lead two flower schools tomorrow at the Wellman bank at 1 am and the G A R room at the courthouse at 1 30 pm Men and women are invited. Tomorrow evening at the G A R room Prof Tate entomologist will discuss the canker worm and demonstrate prevention. Beer producers meet this evening at 7 30 in the G A R room with Rex Beresford of the Iowa State college extension service as speaker. All meetings are sponsored by the Farm Bureau.
