In Des Moines the Iowa House voted 76 to 2 against concurring with six Senate amendments to the Farm Bureau bill. The measure returns to the Senate, then possibly to a conference committee if no concurrence is reached.
A historic note shows Beverly Hiles announcing a one person committee to locate a minded Chinaman combining Confucius and Hamilton traits. He jokes about visiting laundries and chop suey joints while working for the government after a recommendation from Morgenthau.
Charley Thogmartin of Trenton Missouri was killed instantly today at 2 30 p m when struck by Rock Island passenger train No 30. The accident happened at the Skunk River bridge where workmen are repairing. The body was taken to Sherman funeral home.
Frank Kuhn, who died suddenly of a heart attack at his Eureka home, will have funeral services Friday at nine o'clock at St. James Catholic church. Burial follows at Elm Grove cemetery. He was born October 9 1872 in Somanauk county Til and lived in the area over twenty years. He is survived by his wife Nellie Petes two brothers Marcus and Joe and one sister Mrs Mary George. He was a member of St James church and the Knights of Columbus.
Mrs. Gingerich formerly of Wellman died last evening in Iowa City after a long illness. She was about 37, wife of Brestian Gingerich of flows tity, and mother of two. Her father O. T. Taylor and several siblings also lived in Wellman. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
DEMONS and CARDS meet conference rivals as Washington high and junior college teams face Ottumwa and Burlington. Ottumwa’s slide after early wins prompts hope. Kupka strengthens the Demons at forward while Harrison referees Friday night. Cardinals aim for a solid showing after a recent strong performance.
The Y's Men club officially took over sponsorship of the local Boy Scout movement at a lively meeting. Dave Elder and Dunham Morrison presented the matter. An open house at the scout cabin is planned for next Monday with many members to attend. Dr. M. J. Cruise was introduced as a new member. The Glen Eldridge trial was continued. a motion to quash the indictment failed. Pen Eldridge faces charges for harmful comments about the current administration, with no conviction yet.
Local business leaders met with Des Moines official L J Schiltz after a CWA telegram proposing two Iowa airports funded with 500000 dollars. About 40 to 50 men would be employed locally with wages up to 10000 dollars total, land lease from the city, and a sixty acre site near or adjoining Washington.
A fire badly damaged a two story residence on South Marion Avenue late last night. Mr and Mrs Dick Lins and their baby escaped in nightclothes with smoke filling the upper floor. The Ralph Martin family upstairs also evacuated as flames lapped the attic. The origin is undetermined perhaps a defective chimney. The Lins property was not insured. the Martins were insured. Firemen battled the stubborn blaze, using much water to subdue it, with damage confined mostly to the upper floors and smoke and water damage throughout.
Gaston Doumergue arrived in Paris from retirement to assume the premiership amid cheers. He met with President Alfred Le Bron and began selecting a cabinet, demanding a political truce until January. Gov likely to include former premiers and trusted figures from the Stavisky affair, with broad chamber support minus socialists and communities.
Funeral services for Evelyn Jane Ayres daughter of Mr and Mrs Dale Ayres will be held at 1 30 Friday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home with Rev A A Wing officiating. Burial will follow in Ainsworth cemetery.
A roof fire at the Jo Wehr residence 614 North Marion Avenue around 1 45 this afternoon burned a four by four foot hole in the roof. Sparks from the furnace chimney started the blaze and the department arrived quickly to extinguish it with only roof damage reported.
The Journal announces a monthly Pictorial Supplement featuring Washington county historical photos. The section was printed in the Journal plant on a large south side press, using a different setup than the regular paper, highlighting the plant’s capability for color work.
The room south of Lemmon Jewelry is to be used by the Farm Bureau as a private office annex. Visitors still go to the Farm Bureau on East Washington Street behind Lemmon Drug Store to transact business. About seven desks will be installed for corn hog workers and the filing system will begin about Saturday. Tabulators' names will be announced in a few days.
At noon today Judge Charles A. Dewey denied Lt. Gov. NS. CG. Kraselel's request to quash the indictment charging conspiracy to defraud the government through PWA activities.
Washington junior college to receive federal student relief funds to create six work posts for Iowa students. Dean Harland Mead reports four boys and two girls may apply, with two new entrants required. Jobs exclude teaching but include clerical and library tasks, four months long, to begin next week and not replace existing student work.
In Danbury Connecticut a Genteel resident found a Progen caterpillar near her home and brought it inside to show family members. After thawing it crawled away. The twin daughters of Mr and Mrs Jack Dewees are named Martha Elizabeth and Marjorie Rheta.
Washington high school hosts debate teams from Washington and Iowa City with three Washington squads in the program. Debates start at 4 30 PM with two more at 6 45 and 8 00 PM. Admission is free.
Members of the Country Club are summoned to a general meeting this evening in the club house at 7 o clock. The session aims to plan activities for the coming season and to fill the present board of directors seats.
Last night’s low reached 12 degrees above zero, down from 38 above the previous day.
